Time for a new folder. Ideas?

Recommended Posts

I'm falling out of love with my Delica 4. I regret getting the combo edge and I'm not crazy about the VG10 steel. It's hard to sharpen and doesn't hold it's edge very long.

I'm a big Spyderco fan but I'm open to other ideas.

My requirements are: Under 4", lightweight, and less than $100.

Fire away!

I looked at those for a long time but they are pretty wide(bulky) and definitely on the heavy side. No?

My daily carry is a ZT0300, which I won off of ebay a while ago for $180. It is by no means a small knife, but I don't think it is overly large or heavy. I pretty much carry it wherever I go, and a lot of times I forget I even have it on me. It fits very nicely in my front pocket. So, if the ZT0350 is smaller and cheaper, then I say go for it. They are great knives. I have been very pleased with mine.

hmmm. That might actually be a good fit. I forgot about that one.

OhShoot has the Military and that thing is NASTY! It's the only folder that actually makes me nervous when I hold it.

You can't go wrong with a spyderco either, I guess I am spoiled by the speed safe and fast deployment of the ZT that is why I carry them so often

I think we just have a much different idea of what is lightweight and slim. I just looked at the 0350 again online and that thing is a biggun. At 6.2 ounces I wouldn't call it light either.

It's more of a utility folder. I guess I'm wanted something that won't take up as much pocket space.

Actually it weighs 4.8 ounces and is much smaller than you think, I have several stainless spyderco models that are heavier

I've seen the specs at 5.6oz, 5.8oz and 6.2oz from site to site. Although very minute in variance, it does make me wonder if there is a difference in them. I didn't see any site listing them at 4.8oz.

Its really the first I had looked into them, and they do get some good reviews! I'll have to handle one sometime.

They all get the numbers wrong on weights, Kershaw even has it weighing more but I weighed mine on a precision scale and it reads 4.8. See if you can find one to try in your hand, you are correct in saying that it is more of a utility knife, now if you are wanting what I call a Gentleman's knife, thin extremely light it may not be for you.

Ever looked at a Benchmade Griptilian? They can be had under $100. I used to have a Benchmade Presidio, and it was a great knife.

Spyderco para-military is a totally different feel from the military. I've got both, and like both a lot. The para-military is really just right.

I'm really liking the new Benchmade 915 Triage as well.

For me a Kershaw of some sort always seems to work. The blur is nice, I got the cheap steel version for forty bucks. The leek and scallion are also nice.

But that is just me, I'm not so interested in a tactical knife as a functional bit of steel. While everyone else is worrying about killing sasquatch with the thing I'm worried about opening boxes.

Just sent a brand new Skyline in for service. No company is perfect.

Agreed,

I just sent one of my two Zings in for service as it does not flip like it should

Same prob with the Skyline, couldn't really get it to flip at all, just a wimpy half deploy; adjusted tension every which way, wouldn't even flip once blade was loose enough to wooble, oiled, even took it apart, tweaked liner tension etc. The Kershaw gurus on BladeForums said send it in, probably detente or something out of spec. Probably gonna be 6 or 8 weeks though.

I just bought it on a lark mostly, as didn't own a Kershaw of any kind, and everybody raved for so long about how great the Skyline is for the bucks.

I'm on the edges of most all bell curves in life, though, so doesn't surprise me much.

I am friends with some of the Kershaw Mafia on Blade forums, after being a member there for over 10 years I have befriended some of their top guys, so if after 4 weeks you don't here anything, I may be able to get you results

'preciate that, but I don't expect to be particularly worried about it, it'll come around on the guitar eventually I reckon.

I don't know that I'll even ever carry it, just wanted to "experience" it. I must say, it has great feel in the hand, an overall excellent blade shape, very light, and sharp as sweet bejesus. It's just that the highly touted wonderful flip, wasn't.

I only have a few other flippers, a CRKT, a couple of Bucks, and a SRM, but I can work them all very well, so wasn't technique. I was stubborn, though, my index finger pad was sore for days after fooling with it.

Consensus seemed to be that the detente ball or groove was out of spec, so didn't hold it firmly enough for it to pop out with enough force when you override it with finger. Or something.

Course, could partially open it and snap wrist, and all was well, but that wasn't really the idea of the thing.
