The way I understand it, no one is exempt from taking the state HCP class (including range qualification) to obtain his/her permit.

And thank you for your service.

  • Effective July 1, 2005, Tennessee handgun carry permit law will now allow certain applicants already exempt from complying with firing range provisions of the current statute to also be exempt from any classroom requirements. Those current exceptions are applicants who prove to the department that within five (5) years from the date of application for handgun permit, the applicant has:
    1. Been certified by the police officer's standards and training commission, or
    2. successfully completed training at the law enforcement training academy; or
    3. successfully completed the firearms training course required for armed security guards; or
    4. successfully completed all handgun training of not less than four (4) hours as required by any branch of the military.

You have said you are a veteran, I take that to mean you are no longer on active duty. It's possible you may qualify under item 4 if you can still surface your military handgun training paperwork. Don't take my word for it, probably best to check with the state.

What do you mean by "gun permit" exactly? There's no permit needed to own the gun, but you do need to take the class to get the carry permit if that's what you're referring to.

And thanks to you and your family for your service and sacrifice. :)

Edit:

looks like QuietDan found more detailed info...didn't know that.

Good luck. The Dept of Safety wouldn't take any of the documents I took. They wouldn't even take my POST certificate.

Concerning item 4, the way that DOS explained it to me was that a person's DD-214 must state on it that the person had taken a handgun class, qualification with an M-16 would not count but some folks do take handgun only classes and if so they should be listed on the 214. I had qualified with a 45 as an MP and it was on my 214 but it was far too old to count for their purposes.

I mean like Gee-Wiz it was only 25 or so years ago:rolleyes:
