Locked doors and hitting the gas. That is why I don't fully stop sometimes at stop signs/lights in certain areas in Memphis, especially at night. I try to watch who is coming up to my car when I'm at intersections in shady areas of Memphis and not able keep going. I often drive with my 38 next to me when in an area I don't care for too instead of in my pocket so I can get to it.

I used to live a block and a half away on fairfax in the 90s & went to Eakin elementary where this corner is in the 80s. This is considered a very friendly safe neighborhood near Vandy. Iit's unfortunate but hopefully a stark reminder to that community that no area is impenetrable to commuting criminals. My long standing argument is what incentive do poor criminals have to commit carjackings & home invasions etc in their own poor community. Living amongst affluence does not isolate you from danger. Delusions of safety are ill advised. One stolen car and some stolen possesions should be counted as fortunate in this scenario. Rape and double homicide are very realistic alternate realities to this ending. Greater situational awareness may have forestalled this by having locked doors with the vehicle still running and a preparedness for a suspicious looking group approaching.

I agree with the above comments, and I keep my Glock loaded and within reach. If a questionable group approaches, Glock in hand and ready to drive...

I'm with Razorback...stay alert and know which way to go if the situation arises. Can't just floor it and risk getting t-boned, know if you can turn or back up etc. 3 to 1 odds isn't good even if you are alone, imagine it with your spouse/SO there as well.

I wouldn't think a Mac10 would help much...spraying bullets in an urban setting plus would it really help you hit all three targets faster than a pistol?

This.

I agree with all of your points. My girlfriend gives me some crap for carrying my handgun to the laundry room in our apartment complex, which is about 30 feet away from our front door, however this happened very close to my place last night and I was outside doing laundry at the time this crime was committed. Just goes to show you how anything can happen.

Targets? They left... in a hurry.

Remember not to stop right behind a car at a red light or stop sign. Make sure you have enough room to pull away if you had too. No need to rear end another car trying to escape.

"seated in a car at the intersection" leads me to believe that they were parked. Where I'm from we knew not to be anywhere near a park after dark. That said, the batting of beautiful blue eyes had me walking through that very park one night. I was carrying but it was still a big mistake to put myself into that situation. We had a little talk about it later on that night.

Regardless, nobody is getting in the car with bad guys. Nobody. I wasn't there so I can't say what I'd do but nobody would get in the car.

Yes...the conventional advice is comply with wallets etc but you don't go to a secondary location under any circumstances.

My 'spider senses' have gone off many times around Dragon Park/Hillsboro Village.

I'm not over there much any more but parking lot muggings were pretty common around there and music row

must not have been some real competent criminals if the girl escapes from the trunk, and while she's escaping, the guy makes a run for it from the backseat. lol. dumb asses. if they're that dumb, they probably couldn't shoot worth a damn either.

Add Fastfood Drive thru's to that list.

The comments at the end of the story were pretty helarious. That being said I would shoot first(if I couldnt just drive off) and worry about the consequences later. After the Christianson/Newsome carjacking/murder there is no way I would allow myself to be taken hostage by anyone.

Similar incident happened to my brother and his friend a few blocks away 5 years ago, except they were 5 males, robbed both of them, and took car.

I lived near that intersection for 7 years, 4 of which while I was in school. Been by that intersection countless numbers of times. Supposed to be a safe area, yeaaaaaaaaa

Vandy has told us countless numbers of times, that the projects that line 12th ave are constantly having crime spill over into the belmont and vandy areas. I think metro has taken some action to put more patrols in place, more substations, vandy and belmont police constantly patrolling, but can't be everywhere all the time.
