Gas piston carbine...

Has anyone built their own? I like to say that I'm always looking to buy another AR15, when my wife's not around. I'm looking at a bushmaster gas piston orc specifically. No frills, no MOE, this rifle was born black and will stay that way. I was wondering if anyone has been enriched by building their own, or saved a buck or two?

I've built a few, working on one now. I've never bought into the gas piston thing. Stoner didn't design it that way, It's not necessary and they work just fine without them. I'm sure someone will be along to educate me better, but I think it's as much a marketing gimmick as it is an improvement.

I built a 7.62x39mm AR-15 based on an Osprey Defense OPS-416 drop in kit. I chose it over the popular Adams Arms conversion because the Osprey kit uses a standard A-frams front sight gas block. The downside is choices of rails is limited.

The other upside of the OPS-416 is that you can just drop it into any Direct Impingement AR-15's and can be removed if you want to convert it back.

I've shot several gas piston AR's in both 5.56 ann 6.8spc. I like them, they function as well if not better than the DI guns.

They stay much cleaner and much less heat builds up in the reciever. However my most recent build, a 6.8 was a DI build.

I doubt I will go to piston AR until such time as the US Military adopts a piston system and establishes a standard.

They have sort of, just in the SCAR platform. I just read an article though where SOCOM isn't bothering spending the extra $$ on the scar16 after they initial 1,000 they bought so they are going to stick with the m4, because they can't justify how much more the scar cost for its advantages. They are however, still going to continue to buy scar17s though.

After trolling numerous gun forums and dropping a thread on the subject in every one I've come to a majority vote on the gas piston AR; DI is fine the way it is. Buying quality parts will effect the outcome of the build (****ty parts = ****ty rifle).

They are however, still going to continue to buy scar17s though.

That means less for the civilian market :)
