Hunting Partner

Every now and then, we all are in search of a "hunting partner", whether it be friend or family. What do you look for in choosing a partner? As soon as I finish loading my Tiller and 4 wheeler (working on food plots tomorrow), I will voice my opinion. What do my TGO friends think?

OK, I got everything loaded for tomorrow's work day.

Every now and then, I search out for a hunting partner, who I can rely on when I need a hand, or I need help getting a deer out of the woods. In the past three years, I have taken on, and fired 3 hunting partners. I can narrow it down; Moral charactor, willingness to lend a helping hand, following game laws, and, following my simple rules.

What do each of you look for in a hunting partner? Am I too strict? What's up"

It's kinda like women. You find the best ones when you're not looking. Seriously, you've chosen good criteria.

I am not very social and prefer to hunt alone. The exception to this is when my kids want to go.

I'd say your standards seem about right. I would also look for a partner with benefits. You know the kind that knows his way around firearms. Has a FFL. And a partner that currently does not have any land to hunt deer on so that would make him deserving. I would also look into his character to see if he/she has children that are soon to be of hunting age so that you could have a part in passing down a hunting heritage. You know.... just saying that would be my requirements. Also never mind is snarky comments made from time to time. That would just be his internet alter-ego coming out.

Edit: I would also add to the benefits part land in other states. IE , MO (prime deer hunting) and SC (prime hog hunting but horrible deer that look like grey hounds on hoofs and miniature basket racks, but hogs are plentiful )

Someone who has the same kind of ethical standards as me, someone that thinks 'close enough' or 'good enough' is neither close, nor good enough.

Someone who isn't out to kill everything & doesn't necesarrily deem a hunt a failure if they haven't killed something.

The kind of person comfortable enough with me, that I'd be the first person they'd think to call at midnight to help trail or drag a deer. The kind of person that would trail a deer 'til midnight or later, because it's the right thing to do

All good comments. I feel alot the same way. I thought I may be way to strict by asking you to remove your game when you shoot them, and don't lie to me about what you shot. That will get you booted faster than anything!

Find you a good person of honesty/integrity, with common sense, and woods smarts, and the rest will take care of itself. IMHO.

I mostly look for someone I like. Often we have different game management ideas, or preferred methods of hunting, or different favorite game to chase. I find that the time spent afield with friends usually far outweighs the game taken on the hunt. I usually don't sweat the little things, but I seldom let the important things pass.

I usually hunt by myself but I do love the company of a hunting buddy. Either way im good. Usually if someone goes with me its a friend and they know I follow the rules and they never do anything stupid out if respect for me.

Personally I agree with everyone. I am looking for a partner who would be willing to hold a camera vs a rifle on occasion with the knowledge that I would be more then willing to do the same. If you don't follow the rules and regulations set forth by the State and probably more importantly the land owner I have no use for you.

I am hunting in an area (maybe a little over 100 acres that is surrounded by residents. Needless to say it is mostly bow hunting in that area, and if you are going to shoot rifle there is only a couple area's I approve (due to terrain, distant to houses and general safety).

Morally, I don't want to hunt with trophy hunters. If you want to kill it and eat it I'm fine with that, but if all you are looking for is a rack you are not welcome. Game management has to be a consideration.

Dang, am I that predictable? We will put the miles on this year guy. I added another 160 acres to the 2,200 (TN land) for pred hunting so pull out your good boots!
