shooting hogs as self defense in the GSMNP

Given that one of his kids is a TWRA officer and another relation (cousin, brother-in-law, ?... I forget) is a park ranger, and he has hunted hogs in the park with them, I figure he knows what he's talking about.

Perhaps he was referring to Big South Fork? You can legally hunt there, but just because he knows someone doesn't mean he knows what he is talking about. As Fallguy pointed out, he probably got to hunt them because he was with the people who legally could. Hunting is most definitely not allowed in GSMNP by ordinary citizens.

Could it be that it was because he was with a TWRA officer and a Park Ranger? From what I can find those type of people do hunt and trap the hogs, but I couldn't find anything where the average citizen could hunt them.

Yes. You can't go hunt by yourself. You can imagine how that would go over with the tree-huggers. But a "normal citizen" can accompany "authorized personnel". It make take knowing the right people, which he obviously does. And yes, I'm sure it was within GSMNP.

Make a little more sense with the additional information.

I remember seeing an ad or position opening for the GSMNP for hog hunters a couple of years ago, I can't remember the particulars now but it was for a civilian to hunt hogs.

What is the story behind the closing of Catoosa WMA and hogs? I was told that someone had been placing spike boards and such on the roads. I am not trying to derail the thread but just curious as to what the story is.

...

I am starting to think they want the wild hogs due to them cancelling the wild hog season.

My post really belongs in the hunting forum thread.

I'm not a hunter, so I appoligize if this is a stupid question...... but if they are no longer considered game, but a nuisance animal, do they need a season or aren't they just shoot on sight? (As long you are in a location where it is legal....)

They're shoot on sight only if you're a landowner or authorized agent thereof, and you can do so anytime. There is no "hog season" for hunters this year.

TWRA thinks some unscrupulous hog hunters are bringing hogs into public lands so they'll have more targets. After all, it's very easy to take a few pigs from a farm and turn them out in the woods. With no natural predators, they'll thrive. So TWRA says... "Ok, if that's how you want to play it, no one but us gets to hunt public land. Maybe that'll teach you a lesson."

Ah, okay, we're all equal, 'cept for those who are more equal, gotcha.

Always been the case, nothing new there I guess.

This is precisely why, after seven years in the legal system, nothing surprises me. I hear stories all the time that I may doubt because something doesn't sound right. I don't often call B.S. on something though, because sometimes I find out the stories are true. In other words I may not believe something, but I don't necessarily not believe it either.

Point taken, but the statement was "...I spoke with a knowledgeable friend who stated that you can legally hunt hogs (nearly) year round in the park. Just go ask."

Certainly the "you" implies " most anyone". But safe to say that if you or I go "ask", we ain't gonna be a poppin' at no pigs in the park. :)

I just learned today the whole legal system is a big fat corrupt joke. I knew in my heart it has been for some time but today I got official conformation.

was assaulted and there is no justice. if I had handled it myself I'm sure they would have said "why didn't you call the police?"

will never call them again. Learned my lesson.

Happened in Knoxville. A Joke of a city!

Exactly. That's why we call it a legal system rather than a justice system.
