If I'm not mistaken the sports have a melonite barrel in 1/8" instead of a chrome lined 1/9" twist.

No dust cover and a few other minor differences.

If you just want a plinker or a truck gun the Sport should fit the bill.

If you want a more shtf/tactical quality AR the M&P 15A,15x or 15T would be the route to go.

I have both a 15A & 15X and they have each run flawlessly for the 1K plus round I have put through each of them.

Also I have seen some basic Colt 6920's priced reasonably lately, they are first class AR's and make a great base to build on.

i looked at one of the m&p ar's ,it had the 16" barrel but not dust cover ot foward assist so that knocked it for me.i am retired from the army so i know how important they are.

Which model were you looking at? Because I've been looking at the M&P 15's also and as far as I can tell all of the models that I've looked at have both of those. (I haven't looked at the Sport model closely, but I know the 15-T, 15-A, and 15-X has them)

edit: looks like the Sport model doesn't have those features but as far as I can see all of the other models do.

It doesn't have forward assist or a dust cover. But for around 280 bucks i'm thinking its still worth buying. Planning on putting together a BCM in the near future so that will take care of the "Milspec" issue

I don't care for AR's, but I'd have to buy one at $280.
