I'm smarter than you!

I'm sure its somewhat rampant in every aspect of society but since firearms are my trade, I'll stay with what I know. This is my current pet peeve about the firearm culture we are all involved in.

Why is it that everyone is smarter than the next guy about firearms, their use, history, and everything related to firearms (shooting, reloading, hunting, manufacturing, etc)? Is it because everyone is dumb but you? Is it that you can't possibly be learned something new because you already know it and have mastered it long ago? Is it an age factor, meaning if you are older than the other guy in the conversation you must be right automatically? Is it that you have every subscription to every firearm related magazine out there and absorb the immense amount of BS opinions, I mean knowledge put down into the pages by paid writers being paid by advertisers? Is it the inability in not knowing the definition of opinion and fact?

I like to think I can learn something new from anyone I encounter throughout my day and life about anything and everything. Do I know more about _____ than you? Maybe, but I bet I can learn something from you if you would take the time to get off of the horse every now and then. While I from time to time suffer from what I like to call "puffy chest syndrome" just like most of you I'm sure, it sure does get under my skin to meet so many smart people all the time.

That's it. I'm putting the soap box away now.

The most arrogant bunch of folks you'll ever find. Some of the best folks you'll ever find are loosely seeded among them. I don't know what makes a man feel the need to establish the length of his fifth appendage by belittling people. It's kinda nice there's not very much of that going on around here.

It has nothing to do with firearms, and everything to do with the ego. The bigger the ego, the more insecure the person is.

When I was involved in racing, the saying was "an expert in every trailer." The know-it-all was usually the one who got lapped first.

Every sport, every hobby, every activity, every interest, people are the same.

Firearms was a scenario example. But you are right on! Ego is the culprit.

Well I'm just chiming in, I joined this site to learn because my firearm knowledge is very limited. Seems to be a pretty helpful place, however sometimes my sarcasm doesn't always get caught but that's expected on the internet. My area of "expertise" is automobiles and I rarely bother to correct anybody anymore due to starting an argument or whatever. If somebody asks questions then I'm glad to help. Just seems it's not worth the trouble engaging with others on certain topics.

It took me til I was about 16 to learn that I didn't know everything. Takes some longer than others, I guess. I always try to remember that everyone brings a unique perspective to the conversation and therefore at the very least I can always learn a new way of looking at things.
