"Obviously we want to get any guns off the streets."

That is a period at the end of that sentence is it not?

Are those the views of that one officer or those of the entire department?

It sounds like they found someone without a permit that had a weapon in their car.

Maybe I'm crazy but to me that does not make the weapon illegal by itself, it only makes the person in illegal possession of the weapon.

And unless they are talking about a full auto without the proper paperwork I have no idea of what they mean by unregistered?

It is very hard to sort through all the tons of information provided in the article:rolleyes:;)

In TN full auto weapons ARE legal. It would just be a case of "illegal possession". A rocket launcher MIGHT be an illegal firearm, but I don't think they are even classified as firearms. I don't think TN even has any "Illegal firearms". We definitely don't have registration of firearms so most firearms will likely be "unregistered", and that is not illegal in TN. Propaganda article.

That was absolutely the WORST written report I've ever read.

Who's writing these things, 5 year-olds?

Close. News people these days are generally incapable of coherent thought and writing. Quoting a MPD policeman who is ignorant does them no favors. That is, of course, if they accurately quoted the cop!

Looks like the newsroom computer geek just reposted a PD news release.

Sounds like what they were confiscating weapons being openly displayed by people who do not have Handgun Carry Permits. Poorly written press release.

checking for cars with weapons in plain view to get illegal weapons off the street.

so the cops are walking around looking in the windows of vehicles to see if guns are in plain sight; all in the hopes of finding "unregistered" guns, all this despite the fact that we are not required to register guns in TN.

Am I missing something?

What idiot has their firearm sitting exposed in the car, without a carry permit? Sounds dumb to me.

I think the "unregistered" is the writer's ignorance, not what the police are actually doing.

I know I am getting old, but not too many years ago, any small town in Tennessee had a line of farmer's pickups sitting in the parking lots of restaurants and parts houses, with a cattle stick in one set of hooks and a 12 gauge or "beater" rifle in the other displayed in their back windows. Nobody had ever heard of a permit, and nobody asked any questions or thought it odd. You put them behind the seat when you went to "town", Jackson, Memphis or Nashville, as there were thieves there, otherwise they lived in the racks.

A different age now, but not sure a better one.

What is actually happening is police downtown near the thug clubs where the gang shootings happen at walk the parking areas. They see some bangers piece visible. They don't have a permit and are charged for their gun. Everybody here should know to take news reports with a grain of salt. They only put in what they want to put and rarely tell the whole story good or bad.

Not to mention the fact it would be too enticing for some would be thief to do a smash and grab on your car. That has always been my biggest concern when I have to leave mine in the car. I normally wouldn't but for doctors appointments I either have to leave it in the car or leave it at home.

Maybe it is Ch 5 for a reason. :) We all know I am not a writer so I can take the hit for this.

Yes but the reporters bias is showing though, unregistered makes it appears something is wrong with the gun.

I am going with what JMB said.
