Greetings all,

I recently purchased my first shotgun, a Remington 870 Express. Thanks to all of you here whho helped me come to the decision to get that one. I got to shoot if finally lasy week and had a great time. A buddy and I went out and shot some skeets for a couple of hours one afternoon. I shot pretty well, about 65%, which was much better than i had expected to do. But I had one concern, maybe 4 or 5 times out of about 135 shells, when I went to pump the shotgun the forend just refused to move. After a few seconds of fiddling with it, it would finally cycle, but I'm not sure what happened to block the action or what it was that happened to free it. Pushing the action bar lock didn't help any. It even happened one while my buddy(an experienced shotgunner) was shooting it. It seemed to happed more earlier than later. Is this maybe an example of opening night jitters, or should I possibly have someone look at it? I want to shoot it again before I really consider sending it away or taking it to have someone look at it.

I also noticed that if I take the barrel off and pull the forend the whole assembly will come out. I am under the impression that the left shell latch should have to be pressed before the breech bolt and the slide block can be removed.

I cleaned and lubed the barrel but I didn't pay much attention to the moving parts.

What gauge is it?I bet after 135 shells that your shoulders pretty sore

My right shoulder did exhibit some slight bruising. Most of what I shot were #8 target loads, but I did have to shoot some of my #00 buck HD loads to see what they were like and I shot 1 of my buddies #4 turkey loads. After I shot the turkey load I gave him his gun back and said thanks but no thanks. That fU@k!n@ think knocked the crap out of my shoulder. He was kind enough to tell me to expect it and to hold the stock firmly against my shoulder. I knew it was coming, but......POW!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D I can see myself shooting the turkey loads again, but only if I think they are going to somehow get me some dinner!! HEEHEEHEEE!!!!!

He was very understanding.

You know what they say:

Any good friend will help you move, but it take a really good friend to help you move bodies...

If you have seen the news in the last couple of days you know that homicide is a very popular pastime here in Memphis.

I had to do a double take on this thread.......This sounds EXACTLY like my buddy and I. We shoot skeet with my Rem 870 Express, have had it stick on us, and shoot Turkey Nitro Express loads for a nice kick...lol.

My 870 did that some when it was brand new.

A few more rounds for break-in and a good quality gun oil on all the moving parts should take care of the problem.

When I had issues, I found it was usually when I was pulling back really hard on the foregrip when firing.

Well, I went to shoot the 870 again today. I had the same problem with the action sticking. I shot some #00 buckshot and some #1 buckshot as well and had no problems whatsoever (unless you count a sore shoulder). We shot some skeets as well, and I had problems with the action sticking. I previously took the shotgun apart and clean and REALLY oiled the internals with Break Free CLP. I oiled until I knew I had over-oiled. There was oil coming out of every crevice when I shot today. (BTW I know that isn't good to do, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't having a problem because of not enough oil) When I shot my Winchester #8 target and game loads, I had probl;ems with the action sticking(BADLY) about 15% of the time. My buddy also had the same problems with his (I cannot remember the brand) shotgun. He has had the gun for approx 25 years and says he has NEVER had a problem with his shotgun. Is it possibly the ammo? I really don't see how it could be, but I wonder if anyone else has had the same problem. From what I am told, 870's simply do not have action problems. I am trying to figure out if I need to send this gun back to Remington or is there something else I can do to make it cycle correctly.

Don't know if this would cause your problem, but maybe you are short stroking the action? It only seems to happen when you are shooting skeet, and presumably more in a hurry, so next time you go out make sure that you pump the action all the way back and then all the way forward between shots. Be violent, the gun can take it.
