I'm all for it! Looks awesome.

However, the guys over at the Mosin Forums would spank you for re-finishing it. They are all about "preserving the originality". I could care less as long as all the wood and parts are original. Here is mine stripped and redone in Poly.

With ammo with the proper diameter bullets you should be able to shoot ragged hole groups at 50 yards with that rifle. Most of the military surplus has bullets .310 to .3105 diameter and most of the bores groove diameters on those rifles are .3105 to .3115. You can slug your to see. If the slug comes out .310 to .3105 use .311 bullets if between .3105 and .3115 use .312 bullets. Most of these rifles like heavy bullets 174 to 180 gr. If you hand load here is the most accurate load I have ever seen for these rifles. 50 grs Accurate Arms 4350, CCI 200 primer, any case made by Prvi Partizan, (They make Wolf Gold, Winchester and Graf's cases) and this load is good in Laupa cases. For rifles that need .311 bullets for target work 174 Sierra Match Kings and hunting Sierra 180 SP OAL 3.000 For rifles that need a .312 bullet use the Hornady 174 gr. RNSP OAL 2.790 and use a Lee Factory Crimp Die on all loads, it makes them more accurate. My M-44 and M-38 carbines will hold 20 straight shots from a bench rest at 50 yards inside 2" The first 10 shots will be inside 1". I shoot them in military rifle carbine matches. You can adjust your elevation on the back sight in little amounts between the notches by using pieces of duct or masking tape under the back sight elevator. A piece of duct tape will move POI 1/4" and masking tape 1/8" at 50 yards. This helps fine tune you sights.

Why can't I be this lucky and run into something like this! REALLY NICE JOB!!! And there is absolutely nothing wrong with refinishing an old warhorse like this. It's not like he knocked off $1000s of dollars in value from it or anything. I dear say it means more to him now than it did when he bought it and that's what it's all about.
