Who has downloaded it? I played with a MacBook with Lion earlier today at the apple store, pretty cool. They are only selling it on apple.com which is different but smart on Apple's part.

Mine is currently downloading.

I am a developer and have been using it full time for a few weeks. The only real problem so far is that Rosetta apps no longer work.

So here is a little something to get you thinking.

One of the new features of Lion is the Recovery Mode. Hold down Command-R while booting and it will take you to a screen where you can run utilities to self-repair your Mac.

Terrific, right? Maybe not.

One of those utilities is Password Utility. It allows you to change the password of any account on the computer, on any volume attached. This utility has been around in previous systems, but required booting from an Apple System Install disc. Now, anyone can walk up to any Mac (running Lion) and using only the software on the box, change the passwords and gain access to all of the user accounts. I just verified this functionality on my test box.

There is a way to prevent this. You can set an Open Firmware password and this utility is disabled. Setting an OF password is not something most people will do.

I've been trying to find a reason to upgrade. Reading through a pretty lengthy review. No luck so far.

I have Mac OS X 10.6.4

I don't know if that's Leopard or Lion, and I'm not quite sure what the difference is between the two, but what I have no works just fine for me and I like it.

That is Snow Leopard. 10.6 is a very good OS.

+1. That's what I currently run and not sure I want to upgrade to Lion just yet.

These two are pretty compelling for a lot of people.

whatsnew_icon_autosave.pngAuto Save

It’s time to stop worrying about saving your work. Because now your Mac automatically saves what you’re working on so you don’t have to. It’s not just an improvement for OS X, it’s an improvement for anyone who’s ever lost hours of hard work after forgetting to press Command-S.Learn more about Auto Save and Versions

whatsnew_icon_versions.pngVersions

Versions is a new feature that charts the history of your documents, taking snapshots in time, and displaying them side by side with the latest versions in an easily browsable timeline. You can review the past iterations of your compositions, restore a previous version, or copy and paste from old versions to new ones.Learn more about Auto Save and Versions

If you have apps you have owned for more than a couple of years, I would advise no, don't upgrade yet. The older apps will (likely) not work and there will be bugs. Thousands of people have been testing before today. By next week, millions will be using it. They will discover bugs the previous users did not ferret out. One piece of the system that most users don't interact with (Remote Desktop) has already had an update today.

Nicemac,

Question I just installed Lion and it was about to take me through a set up to show me all of the features, then it went away. How can I find this again? I believe it was under setup assistant but I can not find it anymore.

Thanks.

Isn't Apple about to run out of feline names?

- OS

Nonsense. I'm still waiting for OS Lynx, OS Ocelot, and OS Sabre-tooth.

Finished reading through that review and I give Lion a less then enthusiastic "meh."

That's what I said but decided to go with the "what the hell" motivation and I like it so far, a lot easier to maneuver through webpages and find my way around the computer. Just would like to find out all the "tricks".

If it only becomes available via appstore download or on a new mac, I'm not gonna hurry to get Lion until it is mission-critical.

My code is probably not XCode 4 friendly and I've read that XCode 3.x isn't a good player on Lion. Maybe that is not a problem, dunno. Haven't been keeping up with it. I don't have time to update code on Steve Jobs every whim. Would never get anything done except maintenance.

I'd likely have to install Lion on an external drive anyway, at least for now. So they should offer an install disc for sale if they want my money.

They announced today you can get it in an Apple store in August pre-installed on a thumb drive.

Or extract the .dmg from the installer and create your own install disc or usb drive.

Prior to Lion, this was easy. Delete the .applesetupdone file and restart. They have removed that file…

You can go to the new features page on Apple.com. I will poke around to see if I can find the new trigger.

That is an open secret.

Yeah I've been doing that. I really like the full screen apps, I even use the mail app now.... lol. I used to hate that because it was small.

Put it on one of my Macs today , not real happy with the two / three finger swipe change ups but do like the mail program better , it is just like my new IPad.

Really? I like that better.

That sounds like a pretty good idea, especially if it is a bootable drive and not just a bootable installer.

My main problem with buying from the appstore is that it will be a cold day in hades before I buy anything from the appstore. Even colder than the day I would buy something from iTunes. The biz model is offensive and I shall not reward it.

Just curious, what's your objection to the app store model?
