Tenn. Republicans appoint task force on gun bills | In Session

“This Task Force will study ways we can protect the Second Amendment rights of Tennesseans and will make recommendations to our Majority about good public policy we all can support,†said Majority Leader Gerald McCormick said in a statement announcing the move. “I think this is a worthwhile effort to streamline the process and build consensus within the General Assembly.â€

Time will tell.

I hope I'm wrong but this sounds bad to me.

A task force would make it easier for them to control the number and nature of gun bills that are brought out of committee.

Reminds me of Naifeh style politics. Bury it in committee.

wonder how much this is going to cost the taxpayer

So, why isn't there a task force to control the number of environmental bills that come out of committee? Tax-related bills? Education bills? Any other damned type of bills?

Trying to be an optimist....maybe this means instead of 4-5 bills being introduced that are basically for the same thing and members not knowing which to get behind, that one will be introduced that all or more are in agreement with.

But as has been said...time will tell.

Yeah, that is the ticket... and I've got this bridge in Brooklyn to sell you really cheap.

Seems kind of meaningless to me. Until elected officials grow a pair and actually vote yes for a bill instead of "we'll leave it up to (fill in the blank)", it's all pointless.

Never understood why the 2A is so hard for politicians to understand. They need a task force, really?

How about just respecting the Bill of Rights?

Flippin' politicians, they're all the same - make it more complex so there are more people to blame while you're screwing them.

Interested parties contacting members of the "Task force" to inquire about their intents and the timing of planned activities resulted in this reply from one, paraphrased, with a sprinkling of direct quotations: Session is 6 months away, what is the rush? "Most legislators (and everyone else) are traveling and getting caught up on our real jobs since we are out of Session... most of these things don't start until the fall."

John F. Kennedy speaking on "Time" related this quip:

"The great French Marshall Lyautey once asked his gardener to plant a tree. The gardener objected that the tree was slow growing and would not reach maturity for 100 years. The Marshall replied, 'In that case, there is no time to lose; plant it this afternoon!"

We as gun owners actually believed our elected politicians. Our bad. We need to remember that a politician only stays honest as long as we hold their feet to the fire. For this next legislative session, don't forget that!

I know they are talking about a bill that would make places that prohibit CCW responsible if a person is the victim of a crime.

In other words your employer will not let you carry and you get carjacked to or from work they are held financially responsible for it.

I agree. Even if it did happen, the first time a victim or victims family tried to collect under the terms of the law, it would be challenged in court and tied up for years. The only case that is similiar was where a woman was kidnapped from a store parking lot, stuffed into the trunk of her own car, driven across the Mississippi river to Arkansas, raped and murdered. The family filed suit. The case went back and forth and was eventually ruled in favor of the plaintiff at the Tennessee Supreme Court. However, it was eventually overturned in favor of the defendent.

The actions this session of neutering the parking lot bill were absurd. I don't know what drugs Vance Dennis and Barrett Rich were on to actually believe that business will change their policy on their own just because of an "incentive". I've got some beach front property in Oklahoma for them to buy.

If this task force does not take the bull by the horns on the parking lot bill and cause a REAL bill to be introduced and BACKED, I will know where we all stand.

Such a bill is unlikely to pass. That would place business owners in a "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" position. If an employee was injured/killed due to a legally carrying coworker or customer (in cases where it was allowed) the employer would be held liable. If they did not allow carrying they would still be held liable in the event of a gun related criminal act. Pretty untenable position.

How many injuries or deaths have been committed by HCP or CCP holders?

Besides the ones who shot themselves cleaning it.

It's not the frequency Bajabuc, it's the possibility. Either scenario (allowed or prohibited) would result in liability for the business owner, leaving them no choice as to risk management.

The comments behind this opinion piece miss the entire point of the intent of the formation of the body. IF the group functions as it is set up to, it will lesson the amount of time spent on issues related to firearms, as the heavy lifting required to ferret out the true Constitutional nature of legislation in Tennessee would occur offline so to speak, leaving more time to debate on the floor of the House whether dogs should be restrained in vehicles and who should be prosecuted for posting pictures on the internet.

To the commentators on the article in the Tennessean, the chorus of statements that "Jobs" should be the only focus of the Legislators, I find nothing in the TN Constitution related to the issue. If the State wants to really facilitate creation of private jobs, they need to reduce their involvement not increase it, get their sticky fingers out of the mix, regulate and tax businesses less. Every time the Government involves itself more in private business the less freedom there is for entrepreneurs to be successful.
