The great state of Texas...

So gentleman, I'm taking a trip to San Antonio to visit my mother who is a driver based out of a USX terminal there. Despite being yanked all over the east coast on the Army's behalf, I have never been to Texas. All I heard about being out there was Steers and Q****s, lol.

Any warnings?

Having been bred, born, and reared there and now living in Tennessee (see screen name) I can only say you are going to FAR better place than wherever you are now! It is a freer, more open, trusting place with more possibilities for hard working folks than any place else I know. If Texas seceded (and she could someday) I'd have to go "home" to live and serve. Remember Gus from LONESOME DOVE having to be buried back home? The movie got it right. Tex Mex, brisket, bluebonnets, Blue Bell ice-cream............ HOME!!!

(and be careful where you tell your "steer joke" - you know how steers become steers, right? :)

I'm greatly looking forward too it actually. It'll be a good chance to get away from this muggy southern weather for one. I've heard a lot of good things about it coming from my mother (which means something considering she is a born and raised southerner).

By the way, the Steer & Queers joke is a reference to the movie full Metal Jacket of course. But I definatly don't want to end up like a steer so I'll hold my tongue when I get there. :)

One thing you will find is the majority of BBQ is beef, not pork. Talk to the locals and they will steer you to some great local BBQ joints.

What part of Texas are you from? I used to live in Ft.Worth. If I ever moved from middle Tn it would be back to Texas.

I've only traveled there, Plano, Houston, San Antonio and drive across the Eastern side of the state and Western side of the state (Amarillo, south and west), and if I needed to ever pick up and relocated, I would do everything I could to move to Texas. Have family near Plano and Austin. I could always cook my own BBQ and there is always FedEx and Corky's!

Yeah I have to say I like Texans. They're a lot like Tennesseeans.

Wasn't Texas settled mainly by Tennesseans? I like atexas too, but we really ned to tighten up that border. I like the Hill country best, Austin and en virons, but when in S.A. i'd be sure to check out the Alamo. I've been to S.A. severalo times and always try to go the Alamo. Even if it was overglorified by legends and movies...its still impressive what so few did.

Lifetime Texan here moving to Tennessee later this year, my advise is if you are carrying a handgun and have the CHL license from Tennessee and stopped by law enforcement INFORM the officer ASAP you are carrying and hand him your DL with your Tenn permit at the same time, ask him what do you want me to do? Also Texas has a 51% sign in thier CHL laws, if a business makes 51% or more from alcohol sales you cant carry there, other than alcolol related places you can carry most places the gunbuster sign is illegal in Texas, worthless paper! Any questions just ask or message me.

The BBQ in Tennessee is LACKING something! for sure.

I'm from Texas, too, and still love it. In S.A., go down to the River Walk and stop in to "Dirty Nelly's" piano bar. Lots of fun. BBQ at Rudy's, the best. As has been noted, the Alamo is a great place. My Tennessee wife always reminds me that Texas was settled by Tennesseans. I say they were just looking for a better place to live and found it.

Nope, we were just being neighborly. We heard you needed a bit of help and thought we'd just chip in.
