Cut Shells

I had never seen this before. Even after watching I'm not sure its something I would do. Puts a big hole in

the ol' bucket, though. Also called a Poor Man's Slug.

Like what?

You might be surprised to find that pressure was substantially lower in testing cut shells vs normal. If not that, then what other reasons would you not do it?

I'll have to find some threads I've read about it. But comes down to barrel damage. One thing I remember is that the plastic can leave all or part of itself in the barrel, especially up behind a choke. It is, after all larger diameter than the barrel. Seems it can travel so far but the rest of the load might still come out through the front crimp as normal, but leave the partial hull. Also something about maybe the hull heating differently from explosion/friction and leaving quick buildup. Both of which build up pressure in barrel quickly with continued firing.

Remember all this came about way back when with paper hulls.

Course, nobody claims it's as accurate either.

Looks pretty stupid to me. He could have cast say a dozen slugs for cheap and reloaded that STS hull as many times and been better off.

Yah, I don't think anyone is suggesting doing it with a choke.

As for the other stuff, who knows - I just know guys have been doing this for a long time and I've never heard of any issues (other than people assuming greater pressure, which has been proved false).

I keep enough slugs around I don't worry about it, but it's a good thing to file away, imo.

I'm sure you'll get away with it with any gun/choke for a few rounds no matter what, otherwise would be well known that it was totally dangerous to do. But can see no real reason to do it.

There's also the epoxy treatment to make slugs out of shot shells, which seems even more of a waste of time (and epoxy).

Hey this may be handy one day after the economy tanks and prices go sky high.

I wouldn't shoot it through any of MY guns, just to be safe, but could be done in a pinch in a survival mode I suppose. You can buy 250 "cut" slugs for ~$60/flat. Much cheaper than slugs I suppose. I'll stick to my federal tactical low recoil slugs for my use though.
