I'm confused, what rifle could be illegal? I wasn't aware we had any bans on rifles other then full autos, is this just a county or city law and if so is that even legal?

Also scratching my head on the 2 to 4 miles thing, hunting with a .50 perhaps?

Better read up on your local game laws, being in possession of a loaded high powered rifle relative to certain seasons is a criminal activity, e.g. shotgun only area or during turkey season.

Remember, the guys who write IRS rules and regs do game laws in their off season.

No offense to anyone, but reading the article in it's entirety does help. Though the writing has it's faults, this guy was totally in the wrong and needs to be put away.

Rifle illegal in the county (I could not find the particular laws for that county): "The high-powered rifle — illegal in residential Bucks County"

Couldn't own guns:"The felony plea meant Manilla could not own guns"

Worriedman is correct. The rifle is not illegal, it is just illegal to hunt deer with. There are several counties in Ohio and Iowa, and I am sure other place also, that only allow shotguns with slugs for hunting deer.

Everyone raises good points, but when did anyone develop a rifle capable of hitting a target at 4 miles? That would be 7040 yards, if it makes it easier. I throw this out with the admission that the shooter appears to have been a complete unsafe and uncaring ass, but the reportage is lacking. Why exaggerate the capabilities of the unnamed weapon (and the rabid collection of others?) when the crime is so bad that it speaks for itself?

As for the crime, if the reporter is correct, and Manilla was firing indiscriminately, he didn't commit manslaughter. He committed murder.

Murder requires specific intent; manslaughter can be negligent or accidental. Shooting at a target you had not clearly identified is negligent.

The rifle used was a 30-06. Could someone hit a target at 2-miles with that rifle? No. Could that round kill a person at 2-4 miles? Probably…. But who cares.

The fact that he was a convicted felon really has nothing to do with anythingexcept sentencing.
