No liquor on the 4th

Well as an old friend of mine from the Marines uses to say "prior planning prevents piss poor performance". I went to buy some holiday beverages today since the liquor stores were closed on Sunday, only to find out state law prevents the sale of liquor on the 4th of July. Needless to say I was a little POd. I am not a big liquid drinker but my wife wanted some poolside drinks to enjoy. I realize now this is not a new law but from the traffic I passed in the liquor store parking lot, I'm not the only one clueless

Nothing less patriotic than banning capitalism and booze on the same day! Plus how many DUIs were prevented by this law…I'd venture to say, none

Yep. Christmas, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Labor Day, and New Year's Day are all no go for retail liquor. Odd for sure. (TCA 57-3-406)

It is a great law and I am happy it is in place.Nice to get a holiday too, like most of you did.

Store owners have the option of closing any day they wish, it shouldn't be mandatory.

I was discussing blue laws at work and I said they should be outlawed for the simple reason, separation of church and state.

No one agreed with me. Funny thing out of the people discussing it I believe I the only religious one discussing it. They had other reasons to keep blue laws on the books.

Yup. I am sure some would have been closed for the holiday and others would have choose to be open if giving the option.

BTW, many of them are small business and I bet the employee's don't get paid holidays so they end up with a mandatory unpaid day thanks to that law.

I had to go to two liquor stores last week looking for a specific thing and they both had signs up on the front door saying they would be closed on the 4th. There are a lot of weird liquor laws here in the south.

One of the liquor stores here in Memphis usually has a sign up that says "get your 5th on the 3rd because we're closed on the 4th!"

Why?

Why?

Because it's a useless law that prevents nothing.

and give me a law that does.

How about letting them stay open and selling items other than liquor and lottery tickets like the grocery stores? You know cigs, ice, cups, cokes, snacks etc.....

For the South we definitely do have weird liquor laws. I was up in IN visiting family last year and you can go into Sam's Club and buy hard liquor and wine. And they sell it in normal size and... "bulk" size lol

Another weird one is that 1.75L is the biggest bottle of liquor they can sell. Almost all the American liquor companies make 3 liter bottles but they are for export only.

In Hawaii you can buy hard liquor at the gas station.
