Premium rifle bullets

I know a lot of guys who pony up the money for premium rifle bullets for their deer rifles. Personally, I've never had any trouble recovering deer shooting the old cup and core bullets like Remington Core Lokt, Seirra Game King, etc. I also get really good accuracy form these plain jane vanilla bullets at a fraction of the cost of some of the latest and greatest products. I can see using premiums for larger game, but honestly, a deer isn't that hard to bring down. Do you spend the extra for designer bullets, or are you like me and say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

The LeverEvolution bullets for the 30/30 may be an exception. They increase the useful range of the rifle. As far as the beefier calibers go, I'm sure there's a "why not" factor with a lot of folks.

i use cast lead usually from wheel weights but if you know where to go you can get the hornady sst or interbond for about 25.00 per 100 its not about the bullet its where you put it

If whatever you are using works, leave it alone. However, you probably shoot, what, 10 times a year at a deer? The price per slug is not going to matter in those quantities, even if they cost $5 each -- the extra expense is tiny over a deer season unless you bring in a LOT of game each year.

Yep. That's what I meant by the "why not" factor.

Agreed. I've used Rem. Core Lok & Sierra Game King, 150/165 for years without a complaint from

a deer. Unless I run across a premium deer, I'll stick with it.

For the money, the accuracy, and the performance; Hornady's .30cal 168g Amax is my MC Hammer bullet......hoooh, can't touch this!

You make a very good point about the LeverEvolution bullets. As far as the "why not" factor, what are you getting from the extra expense?

In my opinion there not really worth the price unless you just wanna use'em or maybe your shooting a .243" bullet. My brother in law swears by Nosler Partition 100 gr. in his .243. On deer size game they're probably a good idea in the smaller calibers. I've shot 25 or more deer with .308 Hornady Interlocks. Shoots all the way through 95% of the time.

I tried the "LeverEvolution" Bullets in my 35 Rem. In the end I bought a butt load of Core Lokt's.

I can understand the premium on many of the current varmint bullets that practically explode when they hit something...It is pretty hard to make an accurate lightweight bullet with 1/3 of the length being an empty cavity and have no yaw or falling apart at 300,000 rpm.

As far as the heavier hunting bullets....I am in agreement with you 100% My 30/30 with 165 grain, $10 per box core lokt bullets will put them down just like the most expensive thing made these days.

I didn't say I was one of those folks :-). I have one box of Accutips, and the rest are core lokt. I get a little over 1" groups with core lokt out of both of my bolt guns (.243 and .270) as long as I knock the burrs of the tip before I shoot them. Not that I won't blow 20 bucks on the "why not" factor. Just wouldn't do it to take a deer with one of my bigger rifles.

I can see it with varmint bullets to a point. A deer Vital zone) is a big target. My varmint AR shoots 1 1/2" groups with plain jane ammo. Load it with the right sized SMK's, and they get tiny. Shooting small animals at long range takes some bullet voodoo
