America doesn't want freedom anymore. America wants entitlements. America has been more than happy to trade liberty for hand outs.

Disagree? Well the voter polls says I'm right.

You don't have to like it for it to be the truth.

Building off of Caster's post, the concept of "freedom" has changed over time. Most of us refer to freedom as meaning "freedom of choice" over our own lives, but during the past century, many have adopted the concept of "freedom" as freedom from want, which gives the government more power to intervene in our private lives to make sure nobody suffers any ills or does without.

I just wanted to say that that is so very true and very well said. I don't think our current problems could be more simply stated than the way you stated it right there. Way to go. Now go forth and convince the masses to change course :) !

I too am stocking up on food and other essentials; just in case. However, I refuse to give up on the 2012 elections until they are over and we see where we stand.

That said, while the boy president Obummer is a major problem, he certainly isn't the only one - we have a bunch of non-representing RINO Republican Representatives, RINO Republican Senators and a whole bunch of progressive/socialist/communist/good-for-nothing-never had and couldn't get a real job pieces of c**p people in both houses that are also a major problem (and that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of all the six-figure salaried bureaucrats who are almost always there regardless of who is in an elected office.

If things don't get turned around very, very soon then I believe we'll see the time when it will be up to a handful of states who have the guts to band together and be the immovable rock against the torrent of socialism and one-world government that is trying to overwhelm the United States...shot of those states that stand up to Washington, then I believe that there will be nothing left of the once great United States of America; it will just be another collection of wimps with their hand out waiting for the government to take care of them and tell them what to think; how to act, what to eat, were to live and how much money they can make.

RHINO Republican Representatives, RHINO Republican Senators

Just for future reference: R.I.N.O. (Republican In Name Only)

While I hate to be so pessimistic, I believe it is pretty much inevitable that the fit will hit the shan in the future. Right now everyone is talking about a balanced budget ammendment. That is great, but it still doesn't solve the debt problem, and I'm not including the state debts. We are in such bad shape that it would be comical if it wasn't so scary.

This response is spot on.

There is no Constitutional "Freedom" from want. There is a promise to allow a pursuit of happiness, and that is up to each to perform, however well or poorly that is accomplished is up to the individual.

I suspect most of us here understand that; the problem is that too few people do understand that anymore (or worse yet, they understand but don't care).

Very prophetic, from one of our best Presidents.

While I agree we need to fix the debt issue. Believe it or not we are no where near as bad off as other countries around the world as compared to GDP by percentage.

GDP vs National Debt by Country

That must be an old chart. It has our debt at 8.68 trillion, and we are currently around 14.1 trillion.

Ya know the thing that amazes me is that the vast majority of people are confused on the concept of redistribution of wealth. If you ask them if they would break into someone's home or reach into another person's wallet and take something from them to provide for someone else in need. In most cases, the answer would be, "Certainly not. I am not a thief." However, a lot of those same people who think it is wrong to steal from someone else are totally in favor of the government doing that very thing.
