I am not a pro welder but have been welding my hobbies for years.

A tig machine is a pricey investment for what you are wanting to do. Go get a Lincoln 140 or 180 great all around mig. You can add gas for a mig or just flux core (without gas).

Stay away from Harbor Freight crap especially if your learning how.

you can pick up a good mig at lowes .if you want it to look good go with gas if it does not matter as much flux core is good .it just takes alot more pratice with the flux to mark good looking welds.i still use my old lincoln 120

i just thought it was ironic that his 1st post pertained to welding. Nothing wrong with that...but thanks for your post, which also is off-topic, examining my off-topic post in the off-topic thread. good job

Forum titles "General Interest". I have a general interest in helping the OP find a good welder. Lincoln is my brand, go to your local welding shops and ask what would be best for you with what you want to do, most guys will be happy to offer their advise. BTW, anybody know where I can find a alternator bracket for a 97, 2L, 2 wheel drive, Aerostar van?

OP I have to second the Lincoln welders. I have had good success with The 110 volt Lincoln mig from Lowes, Trash the flux core wire that comes with it and get some good wire. Even better is to get a bottle of gas and go with solid wire. I am also a big fan of tig welding, the problem is cost of the machine. There is also a learning curve if you have never tig welded before.

ftncity have you checked pull-a-part on Rutledge pike?

I have a Hobart 175 (I think that one may be a 180 now) and it does a great job. It is 230 volt and comes with a gas kit and cart. All you need is the bottle. The 230 volt welders have a longer duty cycle than a 110 volt which is nice if you do quite a bit of welding at a time. I have had mine for several years with no problems. Gas really does make better looking welds.

Thanks for the help but I have decided to go with a company longevity for a Mig welder that was very much in my price range along with a 5 year warranty, this company made sure I was happy and had great customer service....I am going to post some pics of my welds as soon as I figure out how to
