been carrying an Emerson CQC-7 for the last 11 years does all the cutting I need it to do. Last I checked a replacement would still be under $200.00

and they are coming out with an Auto version,.. too bad TN is backwards on auto knives.

Ka-Bar Mule folder around $50.00 bucks. Real sharp out of the box and heavy duty nice grip. A tactical knife that folds.

Assume you mean the largest, the Mule 3050.

Taiwan made, if that matters. Probably better than my Chinese Ka-Bar K-2, and actually it's helluva blade, especially since I paid the princely sum of 12 clams!

I like SOG folders. They're not the best or worst, but they work for me. I've carried a trident tanto for about 4 years. The blade on it feels like a chisel and retaining the edge is very simple. I also have the pentagon elite 1 that I swap out with the trident from time to time and it's nice, but I like the trident better. It's spring assist and has a cool safety feature. The scales feel better than the pentagon too.

I recently bought a Cold Steel Recon 1 and I've been very pleased with it so far. The handle has a good non-slip texture to it, almost feels like sandpaper or skateboard tape. I got the tanto tip without the serratted edge. It did seem a little bulky when I first pulled it out the box, but honestly I've had it in my front pocket when I leave the house pretty much everyday since I got it, and I hardly notice it's there. Most of the time I actually forget I have it on.

I also have a SOG Seal Pup Elite, but that one's not legal to carry in TN (just barely), so it stays home as my SHTF knife. :stare:

SOG makes a good knife, I have owned a few and liked them very much

Ka-Bar K-2. Sheeps foot blade. Very sharp out of the box. Feels great. Smooth opening. SMKW for $20.00! Great deal for a great knife. ..

I think the K2 Gila:

And the K2 Agama:

Are more versatile. And only $12 and $16 including shipping from Amazon .

All the K2's are Chinese made, of course.

Does anyone make a good folder out of 1095 or the like anymore ?

Most manufacturers have got away from using 1095 steel. While a few years ago it was considered a superior knife blade steel newer steels are more corrosion resistant, have better strenght and therefore make a for a better blade

Just not a big fan of all the stainless steels.

I know the fixed blade knives that moved away from good carbon steel in favor of stainless have been junk.

There's just not much consumer demand for a EDC folder that rusts easily.

Also, high carbon steel doesn't wear as well with a knife that has moving parts -- friction wear affects solidity of lockup over time, etc.

Stainless steel is a good, cheap, but strong metal. It's well suited to knives because the blades are generally short and need to be rigid. The problem with stainless steel comes when you try to make a longer blade with it. That's why the swords you find that are made from stainless steel are all considered crap.

Because it's so hard, it doesn't give much so when you put enough pressure on it it'll just shatter. Knives with shorter blades are a little more sturdy. But those longer blades need to be flexible. It's the same principle as a tree swaying in the breeze. So with a sword or longer blade then a carbon steel or something similar is preferred because of the flexibility.
