Rossi m92 .38/.357 lever action

Does anybody have any experience with the gun or one similar? I love the looks of them and they are a couple hundred less than the marlin 1894. Problem is finding one in .38/.357.

Really only about $50-75 at most less than Marlin base model .357. Trouble is, as you say, finding a Marlin in stock at street price. I paid $485 at WalMart for one couple years ago, but was extremely lucky to find it.

Haven't looked in a while, but you can generally get a Marlin for + MSRP on Gunbroker. Have you checked it for the Rossi?

The marlins I've seen in 44 mag and stainless have been going for well over 600. I can get a rossi in 44 mag and stainless for 475.

Both of them seem to be hard to find in .357 though.

I've got a Rossi in .357. It needed a little break-in before it would function smoothly. It does not like the short 148gr .38Spl target loads. The short rounds do not feed well. Aside from that, it's a nice little carbine. With heavy .357 loads, it's probably good to use on deer at short range. Light .38 reloads are cheap plinking ammo.

The Marlin is still a superior rifle. The quality and design are better, and the action is really smooth and slick. If you can spring for the Marlin, you won't regret it.

I have two of the Rossi 92 clones, one in 45lc and the other 44mag. The 92 action is as strong as it gets, and with a little work can be made as slick as as well you know. Having said all that I do have a 1894 in 357 and it won't be going anywhere.

I love mine in 45LC! The action was a little stiff through those first 50 rounds, but seems to have become smoother ever since. Hope you can find one! I agree Marlin is the bomb, but my Rossi will be the baby for now!

That Rossi is a great looking gun. I would love to have one as well. I have never seen one in person though and I always look for one at the gun shows. It might be a gun you will have to order online.

I do want a .357 but the prices on them are inflated right now because they are so hard to find. I was just using prices off of gunbroker for reference on the .44 mag. I could buy the .44 mag at a local gun shop today for 475 but thats not what I really want so I'll wait.

Walmart out of stock on the Rossi .357 carbines, I tried to order one - Davidson's also out - guess we'll have to wait for the next boat from Brazil.

I did see one at Walmart Crossville, but with a 24" barrel. Probably gone by now.

Settled for a Handi Rifle TALO Trapper. Not bad

That's the link to the online catalog. I don't know if you can order any of them or if they have some in a warehouse somewhere that they can ship to the store. I don't know exactly how it works.

Thanks for the link. From what i gathered, you can order any of them with 1/2 up front and they will specially order it for you. Although it does not show the prices nor if they ship the gun to the Walmart you ordered it through or if they ship it directly to your home. More research is needed.

On my attempted order, the clerk handed me a ring binder catalog to look through. After I found the gun, he called - someone, presumably in some warehouse, somewhere - and learned the .357 Rossi was unavailable.

The gun would have shipped to the local store, where I would have to do TICS, etc.

I have a ranchhand (basically a shortened 92) in .38/.357. Shoots good, functions good.

I have the stainless .357 Rossi 92 saddle ring carbine. Sent it off to Steve Young - he removed the idiot top safety (and did a fine job), stripped it down and removed the metal shavings, smoothed edges, etc. that needed to be cleaned up from the factory, replaced the plastic follower with a metal one, and did a tune-up.

It cycles very smoothly, shoots straight, and feeds most loads with no problem. I added a tang sight just for fun.

Bought this for my wife, back when we were trying to find a rifle that suited her. It has not left the rack (except for cleaning) for 5 or 6 years now. I don't hunt, the wife eventually settled on an M1 carbine for personell management. That said, I just had it off the rack and the action is slick, the gun handles very nicely - quick to point, light and handy. Great piece, and you won't be unhappy with one - especially if Steve works his magic on it. I have a new walnut stock set to replace the mystery wood (which isn't bad, but still - walnut is the way to go). I doubt I will ever install it, since my wife ended up not really wanting the rifle. Let me know if you'd like it.

I forgot about Robertsons. I checked and they don't have the one I'm looking for either. I guess my search continues.

I tried for a couple of years to get a good deal on a used .357Mag; it never happened. They sell as soon as they are listed. Might as well buy new. Buds sells both the Marlin and the Rossi, but they are out right now. CDNN has Winchesters, but they are $800.

On a personal note. Stay far away from any of the LSI 44 mag, 92 clones.

I have two Rossi .357 a 16 inch barrel one and a 20 inch one. The 16 is one of my favorite guns. I also have a Marlin .357 1894. The 20 inch has had 6 rounds through it just to see if it was OK. I find that the Rossi Puma is lighter, smoother and shoots just as straight as the Marlin. The 16 inch I use for my truck gun, back up deer gun and is always loaded in the bedroom. I had gotten the 20 inch as a deer gun for the wife to hunt with. Thats not going to happen. I am thinking of taking it to the gun show this weekend (18-19 Murfreesboro) and see if it can turn into a XDm 3.8 9mm. The reason you don't see them in the gun shops or shows is that people that have them like them too much to sell them. They are not as well finished as a Marlin but a lot more fun and handy.

I have one in 45LC and it has been a great gun. I had one in .357, and as someone else mentioned, had trouble with it feeding .38 spec loads.

Mine feed anything just fine. Some people found that they don't like to be turned on there side to be cycled. My Marlin is like that.

Got to wondering, so I called Steve Young (THE '92 gunsmith in the CAS world).

The manufacturer (Taurus/Brastech) does the various calibers in batches. The importers/distributors are out of the .357 stainless guns right now, so a buyer would have to wait for another batch to be made/imported.

EMF/Hartford no longer imports them. Taurus made some changes and they no longer meet EMF's specs. The Hartford marked guns have better wood, better sights, and better fit/finish.

Steve will replace the sights, etc. - but it gets spendy quick... and he has an 8 month backlog. He notes, by the way, that the Winchesters have better fit and finish, but the internals leave much to be desired. I won't make any specific quotes, but it got a bit salty.
