Made my first trip ever there today and didn't get robbed or killed. I am thinking it is overrated.

You the guy Byrd was telling me about that came to "Memphis" but actually you were in Germantown at a gun store? When you come again let me now if you want to see the bad area. You can sign the MPD waver that waves them and me of any liability of injuries and or death that could happen and you can ride in the squad car with me for a shift. It's not that bad but you have to know where you are and where you shouldn't be. Get to the wrong area and it could get ugly very quickly.

It's not like Memphis is a supersized ghetto there are good spots then there are places any well informed man in his right mind wouldn't go, especially after the sun sets

My job takes me into those areas, some areas, I probably wouldn't stop if a cop was behind me! (Thomas and Chelsea being one, South Parkway and Lauderdale being another)

Most parts that most people will ever go are fine, its those wrong turns that you can end up in bad places, just drive and drive fast out of them. Like the ones above, there is really no reason that the normal person would be required to go to those places. People drive in most areas every day and nothing ever happens, South Third headed to the casino's for example.

Bnoland, I tried to help one of you guys out the other day, his car was overheating and he was parked in Briarcrest parking lot out near Poplar/Shady Grove. It wasn't spewing, and he let it cool and then headed to the station.

Bnoland what area do you patrol?

Westwood/whitehaven.. South of Brooks west of airways. The only nice part is the area near Elvis Presleys house. The rest of the area has lots of gang activity.

I bet he was in a charger too! Those things are terrible about over heating especially as hot as it has been lately.

The only upside I see, for the most part it's gang on gang violence. I rarely see an uninvolved/innocent victim. They are almost always another drug dealer, rival gang member, some one shooting dice with them but has brought weighted dice to win.

I'm down that way from time to time, especially in the industrial areas, but other commercial areas as well

Yep!

You should know all to well. That's what my interpretation of it is as well. If they keep shooting each other, that means there could be less of them someday.....well for that whole reproducing issue!

When I'm out doing an appraisal though I tend to stop, take pictures, pull into places to turn around, have to get out at the property and do my inspections. I'm always on high alert. Armed as well. So if you ever see a red 4 door Jeep Wrangler with a guy that looks lost and is taking pictures, that's me!

Cool, I will keep an eye out. From what i have seen most of it is not random. I have been on almost 3 years, two of those where I am now which is considered the top two for worst area in the city. I don't think I have seen any violent crimes that were random. Obviously things like car break ins and home burglaries are more random but those also don't typically put lives in danger. If they wouldn't reproduce they would eventually kill each other off. It's a shame for every one killed there are probably 3-4 replacing him/her.

Mostly what I have to worry about are the fine young/old outstanding high class "lady's" that are walking down Lamar or down Third. I was appraising an industrial building at Lamar and Winchester, I was sitting in the parking lot writing my notes down and this young white girl was walking down Lamar staring at me, she was a bit thin, looks like she has missed a few meals in lieu of some meth or something, luckily a lonely guy in a truck came by and picked her up, I'm sure to take her to get a hamburger and take her to where she needed to go!

This is the truth that I try to share about Memphis. If you are not where you are not supposed to be (dealing drugs, stealing, robbing or buying whores) in Memphis you will have no issues.

Yeah buddy, that's my neighborhood! Work also sometimes takes me to Chelsea/I-40, Orange Mound, and Frayser. I sometimes get funny looks when I drop the top and blast Leonard Skinnard.

I used to work at the Walgreens @ 3rd & Belz. I miss working out there. I actually liked the people better than the ones I get as customers in Midtown.

Bnoland: Stay safe. And that goes for any other LEOs out there, no matter where you work. Stuff Happens

Yea, it happens all to fast. We have two officers that work with me at the med today. They were in route to a call yesterday when an 18 wheeler pulled out in front of them yesterday about 30 min into our shift. Both have a long road of hea ling a head of them but with time they will be fine. If it was not for another officer seeing the wreck and acting fast and other officers getting there fast both likely would have been killed. The car burst into flames shortly after impacting the semi. One of them was unconscious and the other had injuries bad enough be would not have been able to get out on his own.
