Forgot to sign in the first time. :) Hello all, my name is Jeff and I currently live in Clinton, MS. I have lived in MS since 1998 but I am originally from Baltimore, MD. I served 21 years as a Tanker in the U.S. Army having served on M-60's, M551 Sheridans and M1 and M1A1's.Retired as a Tank Company First Sergeant. I decided to join here because I will be moving to Rhea County, TN in the next 24 months and thought this might be a good way to make some contacts for the future (Or even when I make my frequent trips to Dayton). I am fully retired and waiting for my wifes job to end and we will be moving, I plan on buying a house up there with 15-25 acres (So if anyone knows a real good Realtor in the area, let me know) and legalities permitting will build me a range. I just started rebuilding my collection about 8-9 months ago (Had to sell all of my guns in 2000 to pay for a Divorce attorney), have bought and sold about 75 guns and currently hold about 20, several types of rifles, several 1911's, some Rugers but no shotguns or revolvers at the moment. Working on that. Plan on having a 500 and a Judge in the next couple of weeks and possibly a Model 29 I am looking at (One of my favorite guns that also went with the divorce). I found this forum through a referal by Volzfan on MS Gun Owners forum.

I am interested in how the nickname Top flies in a tank unit. In Infantry land it was a no go. The 1SG was a 1SG not a childs toy.

Back up to about 85 or 86 Top was acceptable. No longer. Some of the troops did call me top and I never blew my lid about it or anything, usually just made the correction. However, I did see a few Sergeants Major blow their tops after being called Smaj.

Use to call them "TOP" because they were the top NCO in the unit not a childs toy. Used with respect I saw nothing wrong with it.

I realize that is how it came about but the one time I heard a pogue call my 1SG Top that was his reply.

Gee thanks. I was just about to start in with the BS and you go ahead and warn him.

I never called anyone I did not respect by nicknames or first names regardless of rank or position. You could tell who I thought was an a-hole by the strict adherence to protocol. I think that is pretty common.
