Ruger SR-556 Any thoughts?

I know that these have been well reviewed, but I'd love to hear the opinion of someone who's owned one or knows someone who has. Any gripes or concerns? I'm helping someone with their first black rifle purchase and I don't want to steer 'em wrong.

I don’t think I would recommend a piston gun for a first AR. I know I wouldn’t pay extra for one.

I guess I’m saying I would be looking more at the DI vs.Piston, than the Ruger Vs. whoever.

I don’t have one and haven’t shot one.

I and several of my friends have SR556's. We all love them. They shoot great and run great! Much cleaner and cooler than are regular DI gun. If I were to recommend a version of this rifle to someone, I would go with the "C" model, its a little shorter and much lighter in the front end.

I've owned one....

Pretty accurate, lots of nice parts on it right out of the box. I found mine was very picky with steel cased ammo and wouldn't cycle Tula at all even on the highest gas setting. The gas system is kinda annoying to take apart and clean and gets dirty quick, especially with the steel cased stuff. Other than that I thought it was a high value gun given all that comes with it.

For a first rifle I don't think you could go wrong with it, however a S&W M&P15 might be a cheaper and simpler way to go and you won't loose anything on quality and accuracy.
