What do you do with when leaving in vehicle?

Recommended Posts

Ok, many of you have been great at answering my questions as we are getting ready to head out to relocate to Nashville June 10th. Much Thanks to you all!

But I do have another question.

Ok, so there are a few more places there it seems to me as I read thru the postings that do not welcome our rights even if issued by the state to carry.

I understand and will most always walk away from a place that does not welcome us and try to go and support a place that does. But there will be times when you just have to shop, eat or enter that building for what ever reason.

Do you just put it under seat, install a safe, sit in the car and send the wife or what do you do in these situations?

Also what is the LAW in reguards to a loaded handgun/firearm/long rifle in a un-man'd vehicle or does your HCP cover that for you?

Sorry for all the questions and we really try to google or look up answers here on the forum but some answers only lead to more questions.

THANKS!

I put it in the console or the glove box. My understanding is the HCP covers having a loaded handgun in your vehicle, however it does not cover a loaded long gun (nothing does).

actually you CAN have a loaded long gun in your vehicle as long as there isn't one in the chamber. I do this sometimes with my 12ga.

I drive a full size van with a 2 way alarm that pages me if it goes off or even if someone taps the glass or body. So space and security are not that much of a issue. I was just concearned about what the law might be and what the general opion of leaving it loaded in the vehicle. Thanks for the replies

I leave mine loaded, I do have a mounted in car safe that I utilize when I feel it is merited. Yuo are responsible for taking reasonable precautions against anyone not authorized gaining accsess to the weapon. I use my own course of judgment on what most would consider reasonable.

Here in Arizona, concealed means concealed. You can get away with going into most places that post and if you happen to get made, they can just ask you to leave. If you refuse they can call the cops for trespassing and that's it. The only exception is a restaurant or bar that is posted. You can be arrested on the spot.

Apparently not so in TN. Dunno if car break ins are an issue in public places/lots out there but I'm pretty adamant about avoiding businesses that are posted so hopefully it wont be a problem.

I assume the malls out there are posted like everywhere else. I don't really go to malls but I'm sure my wife will want to go every once in a while.

On the subject of leaving the gun in the vehicle, say in a console, and someone without an HCP remains in the vehicle, could they be charged with the intent to go armed? If so, I guess technically the owner of the gun would have to unload and separate the ammo to be totally legal, correct?

small lockbox hidden underseat

Amazon.com: GunVault NV100 NanoVault with Key Lock, Fits Sub-Compact Pistols: Home Improvement

or similar. it also has a cable that goes around the seat, so the whole thing cant just be taken out.

I generally leave it loaded and put gun into in that case (mainly just because holster doesnt fit, or it would all go in).

That way its unlikely to be found, and unlikely to be quickly stolen if found.

and yes, your hcp does cover you

I don't think they could be charged unless the gun was left in the vehicle of a person without a HCP. Not in the situation you described. But I could be wrong.

I have a lockbox under the front seat of the Jeep. If leaving vehicle to enter a no-carry place, usually draw the weapon encased in the pocket holster while still in the vehicle and set it on the console. Then after I step out I put it in the lockbox under the seat. A younger person might be able to do it without exiting the vehicle, but that is a bit of a stretch for me.

I lock mine in the glovebox in the very rare occasion where I am going someplace I cannot carry and have my gun on me*.

* I don't even make a point to avoid places that post, and there are literally only two places I go with any regularity that won't let me carry. The first is when I go to court, and I just disarm and lock it up in my office before walking to court. The second is a bar I like to go to. If I'm eating there it's a bit of an issue, but mostly I'm going there to drink. In which case I can't carry my gun anyway and I leave it at home. While it's good to keep your eyes open to make sure you don't carry past a sign, they are not as prevalent as some people may have you believe (or maybe it's just that way in Memphis or in the places that I tend to go).

I use a small lockbox secured inside the vehicle as well.

If you are leaving a weapon in a vehicle with another person who doesn't have an HCP, you need to either lock it up, unload and appropriately separate the weapon and ammo, or bring the person inside with you. Leaving a loaded weapon hidden but unsecured in a car with another person is no different than leaving them with the weapon.

I just found a great hiding spot in my truck. So good of a spot, the wife found it after I had the truck for 6 months! I thought she broke it at first bit nope its a hidden compartment. I figure if it took us 6 months to find it, it has to take someone a while to find my gun. Time they don't have.

There's a good spot in the S2000 that very few people know about. Even a lot of owners don't know about it. And I aint telling you guys!

No. :P So much work left to do. And I still need to find someone to help me unload my safe when it gets there.

Cars left yesterday.

I rarely ever leave my gun in my car. The few times I go to a school/college for whatever reason in TN I will stop somewhere before going to the college, unload my handgun, seperate the gun from the ammo, and put both in the trunk. I do this because I am not dropping off/picking up passengers. I prefer to put the gun in my trunk at other locations because I do not have a car safe.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking.
