He looks southern, talks southern and shoots pretty well too. He told me.....

In the South Jews had adopted Southern values and traditions and was fanatically pro-Dixie. Arriving without trades or professions, they were not suited to the agrarian economy and hard manual labor of the new America. Yet in virtually every city or town of antebellum America the Jewish storekeeper, peddler, watchmaker, tailor or shoemaker had become a permanent figure.

Jews in the South were longer settled. Significant numbers had lived in Charleston since 1700, in Savannah since 1733, and in Mobile, New Orleans and Memphis, where they participated as equals in Southern society. In dedicating a Savannah synagogue in 1820, Dr. Jacob de la Motta asked, "On what spot in this habitable globe does an Israelite enjoy more blessings, more privileges, or is more elevated in the sphere of preferment, and more conspicuously dignified in respectable stations?" The Jewish businessman and the Jewish plantation owner attracted little attention in the South. Rabbi James Gutheim of Montgomery, AL, who arrived in America in 1843, had no problem asking divine intervention for "our beloved country, the Confederate States of America. May our young Republic increase in strength, prosperity and renown."

Over 2100 southern jews joined the Confederate Army around 20 were officers.

So I had to ask him why he voted for Obama. He said his grandmother made him swear that he would never vote for the party of Lincoln and always for for the good conservative Democratic party.

The Democratic party from Lincoln's time is more Republican than today's Democrats. Hell they were probably even more Republican than the Republicans of today.

I worked with a friend who was a "true southern Democrat". He built AK's, hunted, fished and spent the majority of his life in the military (Special Forces to be exact). He would say that even though he was a registered Democrat he always voted Republican because they are closer to what a true Democrat should be. He even said that he was more conservative than most of the Repulicans in office today.

Your friend needs to go back and look at the ideals and values from back in Lincoln's time. After that he needs to vote according to those values regardless of the party. It wasn't until the 1900's that the Democratic party took the turn that lead them to where they are today.

I would gladly take a 1860's Democrat over a twentieth century Republican.

The PROGRESSIVE mindset...that really gripped the Democrats after WWI and has ever since...actually got its start under Teddy Roosvelt...in actuality neither "party " is immune to progressive mind screwing

Where I grew up in 1950's central Alabama, a very conservative place, it may as well have been illegal to be a republican. :) Both parties have changed a lot even over the last few decades.

You might find a book called The Jewish Confederates by Robert Rosen. A great study on the Jews who fought for the South.

Thanks. I will try to find that book on Amazon. I'm reading a book on Andy Jackson now called American Lion.

My Maternal grandaddy was a yellow dog democrat but he voted for Isenhower. FYI there were over 5000 Jews that fought for the Confederacy. Judah Benjamin ( a jew) was Confederate secretary of war and state.

While Grant issued General Order No. 11 which decreed as follows:

  1. The Jews, as a class violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasury Department and also department orders, are hereby expelled from the Department [of the Tennessee] within twenty-four hours from the receipt of this order.
  2. Post commanders will see to it that all of this class of people be furnished passes and required to leave, and any one returning after such notification will be arrested and held in confinement until an opportunity occurs of sending them out as prisoners, unless furnished with permit from headquarters.
  3. No passes will be given these people to visit headquarters for the purpose of making personal application of trade permits.

While later rescinded by Lincoln's Order, it's amazing how a racist society like the South was reputed to be could accept Jews while the open, compassionate and caring society like the North could harbor such blatant Antisemitism.

Thanks China Coaster. I've got to learn more on this subject. I have been reading about US history all my life but I have always felt like a student and never called myself an authority. There is just so much to learn.

After the battle of Franklin about where the old Pizza Hut use to be three bodies in gray were laying in close proximity. One was white one black and one oriental. The white one was a General and the other two were privates. The last general to surrender his troops in 1865 was a Cherokee Indian. Seven of Bedford Forrest's most elite troops (his escort Company) were black.

I read about the Cherokee Confedrates. "I didn't surrender but they made my horse surrender. He's probably pulling a plow up in Kansas...."

I have never heard of order number 11 though. Sure Sherman burned houses and barns but Grant killed soldiers. Blue and Gray. "Cold Harbor"

The "southern racist" thing is a lot like the "gun totin' wild west", both fictional but make a good story. People believe what they are taught, whether correct or not. Damn yankees.
