AR Post Ban barrel question

Recommended Posts

Posted

I built my AR many years ago when the Clinton Administration gun ban was in effect. Since the ban was lifted, I have changed out most of the post ban parts. The only thing that remains is an imitation, press on A2 flash suppressor. The barrel length is 16" to the end of the imitation flash suppressor.

Is is possible, or cost effective, to have a gunsmith cut off the imitation flash suppressor and pin or weld an actual working flash suppressor on the end? I am under the impression that permanently attaching it would still count toward my 16" minimum length.

My other option would be to simply buy a new barrel and try and sell the post ban one for a few bucks.

If the barrel is only 16 inches to the end of the flash suppressor, then yes it must be permantly attached or registered as a short barreled rifle. Depending on how the original was attached it might be possible but not desirable to have removed. Personally, I would just get a new upper with a threaded barrel then you can attach what ever flash suppressor or registered suppressor you like.

I have two of these. It will weigh about a pound less than the heavy contour for a little more money. I'll make you a helluva deal on a slightly used heavy barrel. I keep stubbing my toe on it :-)
