Build a Shooting Range

I've seen people online who build shooting ranges on their own property, and I'm looking to build one myself. I was wondering if there are any laws against doing this, and what specifications would I need to follow to build one. It will be mainly for shooting handguns.

If your out of the city limits just pile up some dirt or shoot into a hill side. My brother had access to free used tires. He stacked them and filled them with dirt. I would probably just build a burm with a load of fill dirt.

As long as you arent in the city limits its perfectly legal.

You just gotta remember that you are still responsible for every bullet fired, so its best to shoot into the side of a hill or a dirt pile or something so that your bullet doesnt go flying a mile away & hit a neighbor's house......

hickok45 has the best target range in the world... we're planning on digging out the side of the wooded hill on the backside of our property and piling up dirt and trees around it to make a horse shoe shaped pit... best I can tell about 4 feet thick dirt walls will stop everything

do not stack tires and fill them with dirt .the epa if they find out or the state epa or codes will charge you with unlawful disposal of tires very expensive to get out of trust me

also if you stop shooting there you have a hazardus waste area make it so you can clean it up bcxause even if you sell it you are still on the hook for the clean up and lawsuits if you dont

Don't worry I wont be using tires... just lumber and dirt

tn.gov has the specs for gun range backstop. This is what they want if you do classes, but is still a good idea to use.

"

1. All targets shall be spaced at least two (2) yards apart from each other.
   
2. All ranges shall have a berm. This is an embankment for preventing bullets to continue in flight and stopped by penetrating and being trapped in a dike or ridge (as of earth). The maintained minimum height after settling of twelve (12) feet with a thickness to prevent bullets from exiting. The berm shall not exceed ten (10) yards from the rear of the target.
