Safe disposal of old gunpowder

Recommended Posts

I have a small amount of old gunpowder that I need to dispose of. These consist of partial cans of handgun types of powder that has been stored in my basement, some for over 20 years. I may even have a little bit of black powder, that scares me. What would be the safest way to dispose of this stuff?

Burn it. If it is not enclosed in a container, (like poured on the ground) it just burns really nice. I would still only burn smaller amounts at a time.

Powder makes WONDERFUL fertilizer. Put it in the flower or veggie garden

However it might still be in good shape. I still have a batch from an 8 pound drum that I have been using for more than a quarter century.

If it hasn't been wet or in overly hot conditions, it will be as good as new. If it doesn't smell funny, load it up and shoot it.

Pour a cool design out on the ground, just before dark. Then when the sun goes down, drop a match. Get it on film, share with the rest of us.

I used to pull bullets from Turkish 8mm. I had about 5lbs and laid out huge Star of David and I gotta say, it was cool. Especially when it starts lighting itself at the intersecting lines.

Try it, I mean it's only fire. What could go wrong?

Heh...Turkish powder used to make a Star of David. Gotta love it.

Anvil launch!

Always wanted to try that with smokeless. BP does nice, but I wondered what the same weight of bullseye would do.
