Opened spam can... how to store?

Recommended Posts

So I popped open one of my 7.62x54r spam cans last night with hopes to go fire a few today.

Rain has set in so that nixes that idea.

In the meantime, what should I do to store the other 420 rounds still left in the can? Transfer them to an airtight canister, or are they ok for a while?

My buddy bought some of those "desicator" pouches and some PVC pipe.....he sealed both ends...one with a glue on cap and the other with a cleanout.

Send them to me, I'll take care of them for ya. :D

Get one of those sealing lid plastic containers, or an ammo can from a surplus store. Storing them in an air conditioned home is far better treatment than what they have ever been exposed to.

Do like the Russians and bury them in your backyard! :D

That's why the PVC pipe

Speaking of buried ammo...I've been watching youtube vids of excavations in and around Volgograd and Kiev. The things they find!

Just dump 'em ina good 50 cal or SAW can. Look at the rubber seal and as long as it's good, and the lid is tight [i've yet to see one that wasn't] you're fine. Not to be a smartaleck but they are ammo cans and that's what they were made to do.:D

I have about 500 left from a can of 1080 5.45x39 I opened over a year ago and they are just fine. I have been storing them on a shelf in the gun closet, but just got a small ammo can to put them in.

Spam can of 7.62x54r = steel-cased surplus.

Yup. You might get a nickle per pound....maybe less since it's painted. Can't reload it either. Pretty much useless.

Most important thing is consistent temperature. As long as it's not in a garage where it gets really hot it should last years.

Actually, you can reload it...it's just not worth the trouble. However, if Obammy has his way those cases can be reloaded, and those berdan primers can be reused...takes a whale of a lot of strike anywhere matches though. Remember...they blackpowder proofed the Mosin first.

Does Lyman still make that primer tool? --Hole punch and aluminum cans + snap caps = Primers
