Brush Gun Scope

Just got done building my AR 6.8 and after a couple of range sessions, I realized that the scope may not be what I am looking for. I put on a Bushnell 1.5-6x42 XLT Trophy and it shoots great, but just doesn't feel right. The rifle has a Magpul ACS stock on it and where I like it set for shooting comfortable the scope is mounted way too forward. I can easily adjust this with changing the Burris 1-piece riser location, but it begins to get in the way of the charging handle. For hog hunting it seems where I would want something for more of a quick target aquistion rifle the scope might prove to be a detriment even at lowest power. Should have stuck with my gut instinct and thrown on some iron sights with a red dot.

If you had a brush/hog gun would you prefer more of a red dot/iron sight setup or a scoped setup?

I like scopes. I don't know about the one you have but I have had a Leupold 1.5-5 VX-III on a marlin 94 in 44 mag and that combo really worked for me at the time. 1.5 is low enough for close work and when you bust one out there a bit, you can crank up to 5. Great combo for me.

Since you seem to want a red dot but also like the idea of a scope and your platform is an AR, have you thought of doing the red dot mounted at a 45 in addition to the scope. I've personally never held/shot a rifle with that combo but I'm interested in the idea. In fact thats in the cards for my next build.

The scope has a built in illuminated red dot into the crosshairs, but will tune it down to 1.5 to see if works for close range. The red dot mounted to the side sounds interesting. Never heard of that option before or seen it.

I like adjustable power scopes, from 2--7 is a good setup that will take you from nearly point blank all the way out to 200 yards. Sighted in at 50-100 yards it will be reasonable at any range from 0-200, at most aim an inch or so high/low as needed.

A lot of folks in 3 gun have a red dot at 45 degrees for up close and a scope for farther out. I have picked these guns up and checked it out, and while its a neat idea the variable scope is just as good IMHO.

Another idea is to loft your scope up so you can see thru to use your iron sights, I have seen this done a few times but most often on a revolver. On an AR, the scope is already a bit high off the barrel and taking it up more may be a questionable choice.
