I am taking a trip to Michigan in about a week. If I leave Memphis at about 4a that puts me in Nashville around 7a. Will be taking 40 to 65, then on up to Kentucky on 65. Question, how bad does it get? and is their a certain time I should try to avoid Nashville?

I've done that, use to drive into Nashville from Memphis once a week, I would take 440 to 65 but go south to Brentwood. The times I have gone north though it seems to be ok, since most traffic will be coming into Nashville from the North. You should be beating the inflow traffic from the Dickson area too. Just my experiences in driving in Nville.

You should be okay at that time of day, you might run into some traffic on I-40 from the early commuters coming in from out west.

As you get into Nashville, you might consider taking Hwy 155 (Briley Parkway) and loop around the west and north of downtown Nashville. Definitely use that route if you are running any later.

Just don't get distracted by that skeet range on the north side of Briley Parkway!!

Rush hour is basically from about 7-8am. The closer you get to 8am, the worse the traffic will be. As mentioned above, taking Briley Parkway will avoid the worst part of the traffic if you are running later than 7:15 or so. Going north on I-65 out of Nashville at that hour will present no problem.

Try for a few minutes before 7 and you'll likely be fine. A few minutes fter 7, and you'll be in the middle of a giant parking lot.

Going east on 40 and north on 65 most anytime in the morning, you will not even slow down through Nashville. Now, if you were going the other way, you would be in a parking lot.

to be on the safe side...you might consider painting a number on your door...and plaster some sponsorship decals around the vehicle as well...it can be like a NASCAR event gone bad around here...just be prepared. AND I'm only kidding.

I lived in Memphis for six years before moving back to the real world.

Nashville drivers tend to drive just as fast as Memphis drivers, BUT I haven't been passed on the shoulder (at interstate speeds) since I left Memphis… That was at least a weekly occurrence on 240, especially near Airways. It always seemed to be right in along through there, and it was usually a Buick or a Pontiac.

I drive in from the west side every day. Before 7 is no problem. After about 7:15an you'll probably lose all of about 10 minutes to the traffic. Without traffic, it's about 5 min from Old Hickory Blvd to Briley Pkwy. With traffic, it's 15, 20 tops. Take Briley around and you'll be fine. Traffic from the west side (accidents excluded) really isn't very heavy.

Briley Pkwy, I will try to remember that.

Thanks.

Coming from the East on 40 and going North on 65, that's the best way. You will be surprised how little traffic there is on the Briley (155).
