old televsion set-up

Recommended Posts

I have an old TV I had when I was 11 yrs old . It is from 1984 . It is an RCA black and white . In the back it only has 2 wire recepticles (screws) to hook your antenna up to it . Does anyone here know how I can get it to work with the new style whatever they call it crap ? I know that when "regular" tv went to the "new style" , people were getting boxes or converters to make their tv's work but I dont know where to look for these ? Any help is appreciated . I hate to waste a good old tv .

Here she is

Radio Shack would be my guess as well...but with it being "that old"....you may just have a small boat anchor on your hands....or a good target..

To convert the twin lead input to coax, you need a 'balun'. It will have two wires at one end to attach to the terminals, and an F connector on the other end to accept a coax jumper from a digital converter box. Radio Shack probably has the balun. I know that Lowe's carries them.

They may call them an input transformer, or antenna transformer, but it's really just a balun. It converts the BALanced line (twin terminals) to UNbalanced (coax).

China-Mart still sells the digital converters.

Take it apart and gut it. Throw all the guts away and fit you a small flat panel tv inside. Put the back, back on and enjoy. There's a lot of people who retrofit flat panel tv's into the old cabinet tv's from yesteryear. The Zenith we had growing up was a work of cabinet making art. Some of them were gorgeous, and it's fairly retro stylish now to have on in you living room, only with a HD plasma fitted inside.

It'll take some doing, but it can be done to look very well. If not for the radius of the picture tube not being there, you can't tell on some of the ones I have seen.

This is pretty nice too.

I know there's one of those converters laying around here somewhere. If I can find it, I'll PM for your address and send it to you. The problem, however, is that the digital converter you'll need to buy to make it work would cost nearly what you'd spend to buy a small digital ready TV.

If you get this working, you may be the only loon in the state watching the news, broadcast in digital HD, on a 13" black and white.:D Let us know if it works!

Thats pretty much what my wife said . She even said to use it as a target for shooting .

*Sigh* Fond memories of countless hours wasted. Spent many a night at my best friends house, fire it up after a Red Baron pizza and play nonstop till about 6 the next morning when his dad would leave for work and fuss at us for not going to bed.
