Colt Custom Shop Question....Colt ACE Electroless Nickle

Hey,

I've got this Colt Ace Service Model that went through the Colt custom shop (all the electroless nickle models did) but mine is a nice serial number....SM*9999. Does anyone know if Colt handpicked select serial numbers to use in their custom shop, or, is this just by chance? It's the top handgun in the pic below.
