Is it so that I can drive to Anniston Alabama with cash and my handgun carry permit, and return home with a Garand? If so, how's their selection? When's the best time to go? Any other advice you could give would be appreciated.

No, that is not so. HCP only satisfies the "Proof of Marksmanship" requirement. You must still belong to a CMP affiliated club. Many join the Garand Collections Assoctiation (GCP) as that is the cheapest way to go about it. If you are military, LEO or belong to some veteran's association you might be able to get around that.

The two times I've been down there it was cheaper to have your guns shipped home than to pay the AL tax. I took my first rifle home because I was so excited. On my next trip we had them shipped.

Also go on Wed. if you can. That is when they put out new stock.

I just ordered my first Garand last month and am patiently waiting for it. Should have it by end of this month. Ordered a Service Grade Springfield. Since ordering I have discovered the forum section on the CMP site. They have a section dedicated to the Anniston Store. You might want to read it before you go there. It seems there are weekly posts regarding what was in the store that week. Apparently back orders for Service Grades are so many they have not been putting out any in the store for quite a while. Plenty of worn out field grades and top of the line collector pieces though. Just saying you might want to check before you make trip there and are disappointed if they dont have any for sale. I am wanting to make trip one day but will definately do my homework before I invest in day trip with expenses. Check out the CMP forums, they will educate you very quickly on buying a Garand

Joining the GCA at the store and being able to buy right then must be something new.

However, you can fax all your information to CMP and then call and talk with one of the ladies in the office to make sure you are good-to-go before you make the trip.

The best place to get information on what’s available in the store (because it changes daily) is the CMP forum.

Members post weekly what they saw.

Drove to Anniston myself well worth the trip (6 hrs.). Had my rifles shipped back. If you are LEO or a Firefighter you also qualify. Still have to have firearms training for the latter though.

Keep an eye on the CMP forum. I was going to go this weekend, but according to the guys that went, there’s just not much there to pick from.

Is the CMP likely to continue receiving Garands (they arrive from other countries via the DoD) even next year and maybe the year after that?

Many of us are familiar with the "White House situation" which blocks imports of these from S. Korea, but really hope that other countries have decent quantities.

Just curious about their long-term prospects, in case my grown son develops an interest in guns. He has not been around them much, because my gun interest developed very late in life when he was away.

Here is what the "Main Man" had to say about that...

The CMP is not a firearms importer and we would not have any involvement of any kind in anything that may happen with these Korean rifles and carbines if they were "sold" to an importer.

The only way any rifle or carbine from any country can find its way to the CMP is if the country returns "loaned" rifles back to the US Army - at no cost to the US. When that happens, the CMP "may" possibly receive some of those rifles. According to the recent articles, Korea did not plan on returning (transferring) any rifles to the US Army, but planned to "sell" these rifles to an importer. We do not have any standing to investigate the reports from Korea or any actions the US government may have taken as a result of those rumors.

I (speaking for myself) do not know for a fact if the sale is being blocked, and more importantly why it is being blocked (if true). It may simply be a question of current ownership.

Thanks for understanding that we do not have any first-hand knowledge and why CMP will not get involved in this in any way. This issue will get sorted out in good time.

You have to be a member of a supported club. If I recall, they will offer you membership right there for GCA.

I'm getting a GCA membership next Friday, then I'm going to wait until the South Store gets more SG's in stock, (hopefully this year before winter)
