Tomorrow, I'm meeting my buddy for a 3.1 mile run / walk. Early.

I won't feel like it, but I'm going.

You've got to start somewhere.

Finished the 3.1 in 50 minutes. Not much running other than a 100 yd sprint to prove to my son that he's not yet the 'top dog.' He's 30 years younger than me and 300 lbs lighter than me...and dad can still outrun him...

Anyway...went on to do 4 miles just for kicks. Feeling good. Came home sweaty and did a quick dip in my still quite frigid pool.

You've got to start somewhere.:)

Very nice, Bronker - I'm proud of you!

In a year or so you'll wake up and find yourself doing P90x or Insanity and wonder how you got there...

:)

Count yourself fortunate that your "superstructure" still allows you to do that.

You had me at 'Superstructure', Chief!:)

My very first pair of personalized, activity-specific running shoes. I got them from Fleet Feet. I told the guy what I was doing, and said 'don't laugh!'

He said 'oh no, it's not funny...good for you.'

Yay for the Me!

Good for ya bro. Look into fartlicks. It's basically running at a slow pace and running faster for short distances. This can be done with walking as well. It's a good way to build up to steady running. For example

Walk 2:00 min fast pace

Run 0:30 sec. Moderate

(repeat for desired time)

Or distance

Walk 3/4 mile

Run 1/4 mile

This will help build up that heart and lung stamina needed to run steady

Fartlek - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Interval workouts are great for building speed and stamina once you have a little capacity under you. Any runner who wants to get a little faster should run some fartlek workouts.

Lumber_Jack, I wanted to make a joke, or edit your post, or something. In the end I just decided I'm not training with you and your unorthodox training methods. :D

...Fartlek...and your unorthodox training methods. :D

I was going to say...I've done the 'fartlick' method before. I made the mistake of eating fiber cereal for breakfast and drank a cup of coffee on the way to the first 5k I did last weekend...

Whatever technique it was, holding my 'fartlicks' in was good toning for the butt cheeks. :D

Haha damn you auto correct! I typed fartlek and iPad changed it to fart lick, and I just went back and removed the space.

At any rate FARTLEK is the method.

Btw you can train with me, just make sure you're faster than me, or the fartlick might get ya

4 miles tonight. 18.5 minute average. Would have been a small bit faster had I not stopped several times to talk to folks :D Minimal running, as I continue to fight a nasty lower respiratory infection. It's the first road-time I've gotten since Saturday. Even still, I can tell I'm developing some stamina, though in small increments.

And the shoes...they have made a world of difference. Huge.

The right shoes will change your whole attitude! Nice work out there.

QFT. Just because they are running shoes doesn't mean they are running shoes for YOU! Get fitted by a professional at a running store, not some mall store, well worth it.

Awesome, Bronker - keep it up.

Now you've gone and done it - you have a crew of folks to hold you accountable...

Keep it up Bronker! I've been pretty consistent for the last three weeks, running/walking 5-6 days a week. I went a total of 24 miles last week. Only doing an average of 12 minute miles . . .

Dude, you killed my fitness thread. :D

Seriously, nice job. :D One of the good things about starting an exercise program is you will see rapid results initially. I would not be surprised if you shaved 6 - 7 minutes/mile off your time over the next several months. Keep it up.

Your shoes look similar to mine. The only shoes I wear to run in are Asics Nimbus.
