LMAO. I have been married 13 and am in arguably the best shape of my life. My wife is also a runner/physically active. We aren't Maria and Arnold but we have come to realize that if we want to stay happy together we have to take care of ourselves. My inlaws are in their 80's and still physically active. There quality of living is that of most 50/60 year olds. I decided early on I want to grow old fit and healthy.

Just keep at it. And as has been said go slow. You didn't get to your current position overnight and you aren't going to change it overnight either. Just keep going.

Keep us up to date on your progress and when you plan to do your first half. I will come run it with you (if I can get my damn Achilles to heal). You might try creating your own blog to chart your progress. I have some friends that did and it was fun and inspirational to tag along.

I plan to do a 5k every month. I walked the first one but intend to get where I can run the entirety by the fall. Guess we will see. My goal is to do the half marathon in Nashville in the Spring.

Gotta start somewhere :D

You've inspired me. I bet I couldnt even walk a 5k atm. I did BBQ Fest this past weekend and Sat morning I could barely walk.

Ill be 40 this year as well and really starting to have my midlife crisis.

My offer to Bronker earlier in this thread stands for anyone. Anyone who wants to make a positive change in their life should have the resources made available to them to get pointed in the right direction. That is, after all what a community is for.

Shoot me a PM if you like, and I'm happy to talk about where you are today, and how to bet started on the path to where you want to be.

Memphis has a killer running community. Check out the Memphis Runners Track Club at Memphis Runners Track Club. There are races every weekend. Let me know if I can help.

Tonight, my wife dropped me off a mile from my house (late baseball games). Had my running clothes on.

Ran 3 minutes, walked 2 minutes, ran 3 minutes, walked 2 minutes, ran 2 minutes, and walked 2.

14 minutes.

More than I've done in many years. I'm in it to win it.

Ran yesterday, only about 25 minutes, time issue. So what you say, I was so sore I could barely walk before hand. See the day before I was at baseball practice, assistant coach for my sons team, and I was working with the pitchers and potential pitchers, they are 3rd and 4th grade boys, pitching....well is not something they have mastered. I caught for 5 kids, throwing about 20 pitches each. Fast forward to yesterday, my quadriceps were on fire, knees hurting and my throwing arm was hurting. I could barely walk! Sucks getting old!

Count yourself fortunate that your "superstructure" still allows you to do that. The weight stress on back, hip, knees, etc makes that dang near impossible for many if not most folks of your um, "weight class" :)

I myself can't really jog because of lumbar region (but it hearkens back to discectomy in my youth followed by many years of abuse afterwards). So I walk a lot, normal lollygagging pace is 3.5 mph, can rev to 4mph. Can even carry pack weight without undue extra pain, as long as I'm not actually bouncing up and down like jogging does.

Water aerobics at the Y has been a godsend for me; I couldn't do half the stuff in the pool on dry land. The benefits aren't as immediately apparent as same activity on land, but over time are great, with much less stress on back. I was already walking 20-30 miles per week for a year, but it wasn't helping my top half. The water stuff worked on that. Also have a crude push/pull bike like thing at home which helps, but there's nothing like a coach to "make" you work out. That's important motivation for a lazy fart like me.

Tomorrow, I'm meeting my buddy for a 3.1 mile run / walk. Early.

I won't feel like it, but I'm going.

You've got to start somewhere.

You guys must have started something. My niece emailed me today to tell me she ran 3 miles yesterday. Not what I expected.

I have twin sisters that I found out have been training for the half-marathon. They ran a 3.1 two weeks ago. I had no idea! I talk to them all the time, but this subject never came up until last night.

We're running together next week!
