Russian SKS

Saw one at a store today in Memphis and darn near took it home. It was not Chinese, it was a dead red Russian 1954 vintage. I've got way more financial priorities right now than buying another gun, plus I'm a miserly bastard anyway, but this was extremely tempting. They were asking 320 for it (before tax and tics).

This SKS was in very good condition. Bore looked nice, wood was beautiful, no gouges or cracks. I didn't look to see if it was all matching but it probably was. You could tell it had been used some but not a lot. Put it this way--for a gun that was made one year before James Dean died, it did not show its age.

So what do you all think? Is this a ****ing A deal? (That's the kind that, when you see the price, you say "****ing A") It's going to take quite a lot of discipline not to go back there. I'm trying to talk myself into it; help me out here.

Just messing with you, I'm too busy barbie'ing up my AR to drop coin on an SKS right now, but I think $320 is a really good price on a Russian in good shape - I'd pay it...

Bought it today. $350 out the door. I was especially pleased that they took my 03 FFL, so I didn't have to go through TICS. It's '53, not '54 like I first thought. Need some ammo now.

What shop was it? I'm always curious about what shops will take my C&R

American Pawn on Poplar, downtown across the street from Juvenile Court. My office is down the street so I swing by there from time to time. Their prices are a little high on some things but they'll negotiate.

Very nice.

Why do so many other people prefer the standard Yugo 59/xx, other than the rugged reputation?

These Russians have exotic wood that resembles Debra Messing's hair, chrome-lined bores (many don't realize this), the real type of bayonet, and no useless grenade launcher junk.

You made an excellent decision.

..... that resembles Debra Messing's hair.....

I'm sure that everyone has a mental image of a chrome-lined bore...., but maybe not what Messing's hair looks like.

This should help. :)

Agree with Laufer that my Russian SKS looks just as fine.
