Thoughts on Mossberg 930spx?

Recommended Posts

Been looking at a Mossberg 930spx but want to be able to customize it like its pump action brothers, the 500 and 590. Anyone here have any info on customizing one of these? I've also been wondering if these are just as reliable as the pump action Mossbergs?

My 930SPX was not very reliable. Sold it in order to get a pump. It was fun, but not reliable enough for a home defense weapon.

the 930 is suppose to be the next big thing in 3 gun, i myself do not see it. i think it is because Jerry Miculeck has sign on. as far as i know triangle shooting sports are the only ones working on them to be race ready.

I don't have the SPX, i bought the 18.5" home security version. I switched out the 18.5 barrel for a 24 non ported vent rib barrel. I also added a +4 nordic extension, nordic charging handle and choate barrel clamp. I have put 200-300 rounds thru it. I have not had any failures. It is accurate, fast to reload and easy to maintain. Mine didnt need a break in. I shot winchester universal 7-1/2 shot, low recoil wolf slugs and high brass remington #5, all without issue the first day.

I have read some older SPX's had some issues, but recent models are much better.

Mine is for 3gun.

I've had an SPX for about a month and have had it out a few times. I've ran about a hundred 7 1/2 shot, 75 #8 shot, 25 00 buck 3" mag, and 15 slugs through it with no problems at all. The only issue was a failure to feed when my kid tried to shoot from the hip, which probably prevented a full bolt cycle. Overall I am extremely happy with it. Side by side with the Mossberg 500a, it has a much softer recoil, especially with 3" magnum shells.

How much would you have in the Mossberg after all the parts changeouts?

Money aside how do these compare with an M2 or FN SLP, which would already be rigged at about $1100.

I keep thinking about the Mossberg but wonder if I were going to do just one HD/competition semiauto SG in my life if I shouldn't do the Benelli or FN and be done with it. Five hundred difference between the FN, Benelli and Mossberg.

gotigers that looks good, I like it. Your 1100 pic posted on THR is a beauty!!

Thanks for posting this. I like the spx (....mostly because of the customization possibilities...) and would like to have an 18 inch plain barrel. I cant decide between doing one of these or cutting down (...or finding...) and 18 inch plain barrel Browning A5. I like a recoil operated shotgun. The problem with the A5's and their brothers like the Franchi is that that it's hard to find aftermarket parts for them. Been thinkin about doing a more modern version of a semi-auto shotgun. I really like this one (...mine has to look like a "real" shotgun. This one does...).

Again, for posting this great picture and the review.

I had a Rem 1100, which i just sold, and a Moss 930.

The 1100, which is similar to the 11-87, has low recoil, reliable if you keep it clean and lubed. It is slower to reload, it requires more maintenance and is more expensive.

The Mossberg 930's have low recoil, faster to reload, require less maintenance and are less expensive. You can read about my 930 in my earlier post.

Both ran all ammo i fed them.

I have about $700 in my 930. A generic 1100 will be $650+/-. After adding a tube extension an 1100 will be over $700. IMHO, the 930 is a slightly better option for 3gun, otherwise both are very good.

If you get either and need a barrel cut or threaded, I used Rose Action Sports in KY. It cost me $65 incl. shipping.
