45 Colt good hunting round?

Rifle of pistol ? I have a friend that has a lever action rifle in .45 long colt and he knocks the snot out of deer with it!

Ruger Super Blackhawk with 5.5" barrel. To be carried as a backup mainly but would like to get proficient enough to take a deer or hog close enough

It's workable! It would be a good choice.

I would say yes. With a good hard cast bullet and Ruger only load you could probably shoot end to end on most any deer in the state.

With a good scope you could kill one out to 100 or so yards.

Blackhawks are nice scoped, and very accurate. I know several people who hunt with them in .44 magnum. Good guns!

Well, tread these waters carefully and at your own risk!

John Linebaugh lists load data for Ruger blackhawks that has a 260 cast SWC hitting 1450 fps. That will pile drive a deer if you hit his vitals.

My Lee Second Edition book shows a T/C & Ruger only load for a 250g XTP with 26.5 g of h110 at 1455.

Should pack a heck wallop.

Yes they do, I have a 7 1/2in SBH in .44Mag. thats scoped, and I shot a little three point year before last at about 60 yds.

Good to see they've caught up. My accurate manual is somewhat whimpy.
