For the purpose of going armed Tennessee defines a firearm as any weapon designed, made or adapted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or any device readily convertible to that use, including handguns, long guns, and all other weapons which meet the definition except "Antique Firearms" as defined by Federal law.

Federal law defines an antique firearm as one made before 1899. Was the BP derringer made before 1899?

I am not a lawyer, but if I remember correctly. In Tennessee its unlawful to carry a WEAPON for the purpose of going armed. Is a BP derringer a weapon? it does not have to be a modern firearm, just a weapon.

No, it's specific:

"39-17-1307. Unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon.

(a) (1) A person commits an offense who carries with the intent to go armed a firearm, a knife with a blade length exceeding four inches (4"), or a club."

So real question is: is any black powder gun a firearm under TCA? According to cannoncoker, it is, although I can't find the definition he mentions in TCA.

Oddly, a black powder rifle is not a rifle under TCA 39-17-1301, but I suppose could still be a firearm.
