Nashville Convention Center

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am walking in the Country Music Marathon on Saturday. I need to go to the convention center to confirm my registration and pick up my race number. I would like to know if I am allowed to carry there. Hopefully someone on here has been to the center recently and can tell me.

Thanks in advance,

farrar

If it's owned by Metro that means a no.

Why do you say that?

39-17-1311. Carrying weapons on public parks, playgrounds, civic centers and other public recreational buildings and grounds.

(a)
It is an offense for any person to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, with the intent to go armed, any weapon prohibited by § 39-17-1302(a), not used solely for instructional, display or sanctioned ceremonial purposes, in or on the grounds of any public park, playground, civic center or other building facility, area or property owned, used or operated by any municipal, county or state government, or instrumentality thereof,
for recreational purposes
.

My feeling is that the convention center is used for business purposes, not recreational purposes... trade shows, etc.

Is this a flawed theory?

Look and see what weapons are under 39-17-1302(a). I doubt you carry anything under 39-17-1302(a). If the convention center is a park, it would need signs generally in conformance with 39-17-1311 to pop you with the class A misdemeanor state charge. Germantown, Tennessee has done this. If the convention center is a usual building that hosts trade shows, it would need signs in conformance with 39-17-1359 to pop you with a state charge five hundred dollar fine. That is my understanding.

Without sign notice, no one would know. People not from, say Nashville, would have no idea that there is a law against firearms in their parks.

Metro prohibits firearms on most of their properties unless it's sworn leo or property guards. If it's their property, they post it on the door.

Last time I was down there, it was not posted... I personally don't believe it falls under the definition of a park.
