Mosin Nagant question

Recommended Posts

Got my mosin nagant from AIM earlier this week. Upon breaking it down, I found some oiled up newspaper wedged between the handguard and the barrel. Cheap way to bed the barrel I guess? Well, the paper was destroyed while I cleaned up the cosmoline.

Now that its back together I've noticed I can now grab the muzzle end of the rifle and rock the barrel a couple of millimeters inside the stock. I made sure the screws were tight where the action bolts down.

Obviously the paper bedding was there to solve this problem, but is this normal? Just making sure there's no safety issue.

I have read somewhere to use cork between the barrel and forestock, so I am guessing that the newspaper was a poor mans solution.

Since it is out now I would shoot it and see what the results are, if they are poor maybe put it back.

certainly nothing unsafe about it

I was curious about that as soon as I saw it. Unfortunately, anything resembling ink was long gone.

you oughta left it alone. Prolly was what it said.

No way would I send that iron back.

I would go with the cork... a friend of mine had a loose fitting barrel, he added a couple of thin sheets of cork in the right places, fixed it right up.

Neat.

I wonder if i will find anything in mine. I still have been unable to get my bands off mine yet. Prehaps I am being to gentle with it. Man it is together tight.

Why don't you just put in a page from Commercial Appeal? It should fit about prefect. :D

Haha. Good idea. I could order some free literature from the Brady folks and use that.

Don't be too gentle with the thing, Vontar. It's a 9 pound Russian battle rifle, not a pristine showpiece. Takes a bit of convincing to get those barrel bands to cooperate.

I got into mine tonight, I got the front ban off with out much trouble The other was a bit tougher, but I took your suggestion with a flat screw driver and carefully worked it off. Did not damage any wood. I took bolt out got some of surface cosmo off some what off. Still in my living room right now, getting already to go outside with it tomorrow for the real cleaning job.

I have it completely apart, ready for some early parts cleaning tomorrow outside.

Anyways looking though the bore, it has some very nice rifling. So it appears it was cleaned well before it was preserved in cosmoline.
