Hiking Pistola?

So, in my attempt to get back into shape, I've been going hiking as much as I can. I've found that I'm totally addicted to it. So when I'm out on the trail, I prefer to be armed obviously. For those who hike while armed, what are you preferred pistols? Myself, I'm having a hard time choosing between a SP101 and a MP45. Obviously the greater threat is almost always from the two legged creatures and not the four legged kind, but I do like having something powerful enough to take care of either.

I hike with the cub scouts and if in a legal place to do so I carry.

I think either the .357 or .45 is appropriate.

I hike regularly also but in a place that has many recorded Cougar attacks. In fact I have crossed paths with them on a couple of occasions. I used to carry a .44 mag with me but I've come to the conclusion that I would rather have a lighter, smaller higher capacity handgun that I carry and train with regularly than the large and heavy (albeit accurate and powerful) hand cannon that I kept on me at first. Even a 9mm or .40 will take anything we'd encounter in TN with the proper aim and ammo.

Can't beat a Glock 23 strapped to the hip.

Absolutely. I carry my G22 when hiking every time.

Hey now, I got close for a while. 6" 44.mag MKVII (See avatar pic) If that doesn't scare the two legged animals then you need to start EDCing a Barrett.

Wow, please give some references to at least some of these "many recorded Cougar attacks". I have obviously overlooked verifiable evidence.

He obviously hikes out West. Black panthers are the problem in Tennessee.

Referencing to something I believe? :)

And to OS, I'll have to look it up later. However there are recorded sightings along with the fact that I have seen them myself. (the same one twice I believe) Also I saw a show on Animal planet about dangerous animal attacks and one of the places they showed an example ofan attack in Sewanee TN. Cougars are notoriously territorial and TBH I'd rather take an extra precaution against a 175 Feline than one of those nasty little drug addicted 2-legged critters. Wouldn't you?

If you are going to carry while hiking do so because of the two-legged varmits. There is a greater chance of getting hit by lighting than being attacked by a wild animal of any kind that prefers to steer clear of people, and they all do, rightfully so.

I don't hike where people are in abundance so I'm less concerned when I hike than when I'm doing anything else frankly.

But alas, we have derailed the thread. Back to the OP's topic, I would simply carry your EDC unless you're in bear country or just looking for a valid excuse to carry a hog leg. :)

Would the new Kel Tec PMR 30 work? Would 30 rounds of .22 mag in a pistol that is less than 20 oz. fully loaded be adequate?

Can't see why it wouldn't bee a decent choice. The overall size might make it uncomfortable to carry but otherwise It seems like a good choice to me. That and the availability seems to suck on those from what I've heard.

I'm just more or less seeing what other people carry. I've already got the guns and holsters. :)
