... Within 1 mile, as the crow flies, there a place that it is said one side used to signal during the civil war. This is some of the higher ground in the area....

Yeah, I've been up there -- I think that may even be designated as Signal Point or Signal Peak on some maps. There's a US Geo marker there of some sort. As the start of the Clinch range it and of course House Mtn. would be the logical observation points to track any movements from north or from Knoxville on your side of the Holston River. Emory Road and Washington Pike were like early super highways through there.

Speaking of which, and I'm not real knowledge about the Civil War, but the nearest actual fighting that I know of to your area was over at the bridge that crosses the Holston on Mascot Rd. As I understand it, it was blown/burned three times, at least once by each side!

Well, whatever it is, don't clean it. At least not until you figure out for certain what you wanna do with it. If it is any kind of antique then the biggest mistake you can make is trying to clean/fix it. If not, and you wanna use it for decorative purposes, then knock yourself out, but hte fact of the matter is that restoration absolutely destroys the resale value of any antique.

Now, I have to redeeem myself being that I am a human male and have just given an indepth answer about antiqueing. That being said I willl explain my answer:

1. My dad used to work for a scrapyard (Steiner Liff for those who know it) and talked constantly about the treatment of precious metals.

2. After that job he went to work for a coin store and talked EVEN MORE about the treatment of precious metals.

3. I recieved an antique telescope as a tip while on delivery with Domino's and asked my dad the best course of action to take, and essentially recieved a crash course on how to handle basically any metal antique.

4. All of my knowledge about antiques has been used to make a profit off of them and has therefore eliminated any claim to me being a girly man due to my knowledge of antiques as those profits have been mostly used to purchase gun stuff.

Kind of a girly way to make gun money isn't it? :D:)

That's gonna leave a mark.

I also dealt only in old coins, and that one telescope. I didn't handle any girly stuff like fancy antique furniture.

I have to admit I got a little annoyed trying to sell that old telescope, as I discovered that the antique world is nothing but old women with furniture shops. If I could've found a buyer I could've made some good money off that thing but I still haven't.

Back on topic. There is a professor for Tennessee antiquities at the Clover Bottom Mansion on Lebanon rd. in Donaldson, Tn.

I can't call his name right now; however I can get it if you really want to pursue this and find out what you have there.

He is well schooled in Civil War artifacts and is also the state anthropologist (sp). If anyone can tell you what you have Tulip, it will be him.

I think you mean Fred Prouty. He's the director of the Tennessee Wars Commission and is a great guy. You might e-mail him the photos at: Fred.Prouty@tn.gov He can help you or direct you to someone who can. Tell him Randy Lucas from the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area told you to ask him.
