First rifle questions

Hi guys,

I'm quite new to firearms, just bought my first pistol in December. Now I'm thinking of getting into rifles. The cost of ammo being what it is and the need for me to get a lot of practice with a rifle, is nudging me towards getting a .22lr rifle. I'm thinking of either getting a 10/22 or Marlin 60. Does anyone has any experience with either of these guns? and what would be the likely price for them around Nashville? And is there any place that offers instructions for basic rifle shooting? Thanks.

The Marlin/Glenfield Model 60 is a bargain. Accurate, and can often be found in pawnshops for $75.00 or so.

I've had 10/22s. Now I have Marlin model 60s and never looked back.

If you like add-ons and aftermarket stuff get the 10/22. If you add enough it may be as accurate as a Marlin model 60 out-of-the-box.

Pick up the 10/22 if you like to tinker with stuff. Every single part on the 10/22 has an aftermarket equivalent.

If you dont like to tinker, go for the Marlin.

If you have the budget for it the Marlin 39 lever action 22lr is a very nice rifle but they are a bit pricy. Other then that I'd go with a 10/22 since I like the looks a lot better and you can change out barrels easy so you can even get the new .17 Mach II ctg if you like. Also, with a new stock and heavy bbl. and little trigger work you'd have a first class target rifle too.

I agree with everyone else for the most part. It's hard to go wrong with a 10/22, but they are better if you plan on tinkering with it and buying upgrades. The Marlin 60 can be found for a good price and is a great shooting 22.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't plan on tinkering with the gun much. I just want to use it to gain proficiency. When I get good, I will buy an evil black rifle and tinker with that :D Will look around for a Marlin 60, hope there are used ones around for cheap.

Even if you're not going to tinker I still like the way the 10/22 feels and the fact that it takes mags, so you can load up a bunch before you go shooting and have a lot of fun, especially if you get a few 25rnd mags for it.

Plus, if you live in the country you can shoot from your porch without makin the dogs bark! :D)\

I have had a 10/22 for about 15 years and I love it. It has had 10's of 1000's of rds fired with very few problems. I would highly recommend one. It's no target gun, but it does make for some fun plinking. If you want it to be a target gun, you can always make it into one.

Marlin: I have had 4 of them and never had a problem will take any ammo you can find. I have had 3 rugers and find them picky on what ammo you use.

Marlin model 60 is just what you need. Good rifle for plinking / target shooting. They can be bought for as little as $60 at the gun shows. For learning to shoot a rifle you can't beat it.

I found a used Marlin 60 for $75. For that price, I had to buy it. Now comes the next question. I plan to shoot this at the Stone's River Range sometime soon. Do I need to benchrest the rifle to sight it in? Would a rolled up blanket do? I would hate to spend almost as much on a bench rest as I did on the rifle.

i have a marlin 60 and plan on getting a 10/22 soon. on my marlin 60 on very rapid shooting it will jam repeatedly, but that is about as fast as i can pull the trigger
