Wow what? If you're getting 8 MPG, and can't afford the gas, then it's pretty good advice.

Do the math - going from 8mpg to 32mpg would take YEARS to break even, unless you travel more than the average person does.

15k miles @ 8mpg = 1875 g gas @ 3.5/g = $6562.50 in fuel/year.

15k miles @ 32mpg = 468.75g gas @ 3.5/g = $1640.63 in fuel/year

So you save roughly $5k/year in fuel costs (assuming you only get 8mpg in the first place (which is rare)). What's the delta on a replacement vehicle? I mean, if one can't afford $3.50 gas, how is it logical to assume they can afford a monthly car note?

I'm guessing someone complaining about gas prices isn't going to pay cash for a new car...

Don't know that he was joking. Gas prices are what they are, and there's nothing you can do about it in the short term. Two choices... pay more, or consume less.

He used the word trade, not buy. He was answering a guy that was whining about gas prices.

I don't see the prices going down anytime soon and that would be a good idea for someone getting 8mpg to consider but as crimsonaudio said a new car note is probably not going to help. He shouldn't have said that in response to the question asked. IMO

It was actually quite a stupid reply from Obama...sure; continuing to drive something that gets 8MPG sounds pretty stupid when you can buy something that gets 30MPG but what if there isn't a vehicle the meets a person's actual needs that gets that 30MPG? What if a person truly owns (as in no loan on) the vehicle getting the 8MPG but would have to borrow money to buy the new, more efficient vehicle? And what if the guy getting the 8MPG is only commuting 10 miles a day round trip?

My point is that looking at only MPG is the wrong thing to do...depending on all the factors that come into play, it might take the guy 10 years just to break even from the gasoline cost savings experienced from buying the the 30MPG vehicle.

Last time the price spiked up and was hitting $4+ a gallon a lot of people rushed out and bought econoboxes they are still paying for and still haven't yet saved enough in gasoline costs to make up for the cost of purchasing. :leaving:

Hmmm, I wonder what he was saying when it went under Bush. Oh, he and his cronies in the oil business are manipulating the prices.

My wife and I both get pretty good gas mileage( I have a tacoma and she has a new camry) and while we are not starving due to the gas prices it still stings a little at the pump. Granted I hardly ever watch the news and get most of my info on the state of things in the U.S from my boss, I wish I had a clear answer as to why gas prices are so high and continue to rise.

You reckon that's why he mentioned GM, Ford and Chrysler? He's thinking dude can just trade his 8mpg vehicle for an efficient vehicle straight up at the dealership?

Congratulations on hitting post number 5,000...I wonder, how many of them actually said anything that others needed to read??? :leaving:

Hahahah, BURN!

Y'all be nice to Mike, he's a good guy.

i'm in the process of finding a truck to meet our family needs .... we'll be on a farm soon and a truck is definitely needed. thinking about a Tacoma ... Still gets decent gas mileage, won't break the bank, and can haul quite a bit. Its not a monster diesel or V8 4x4 but it should get the job done.

i think america just wants everything "SuperSized" ... From SUV's, to Burgers, to houses. People live above and outside what they need.

I think its ridiculous seeing people drive around in a huge cadillac escalade's ($70+K) and see 1 car seat in the back.

A family of 4 or even 5 doesn't need more than your normal sized good gas mileage sedan ....

And you don't "need" a 30 round magazine, but I'll be the last one to tell you that. Wait... :leaving:

King O has just the car for you, the Gov.M Chevy Volt. He has no problem with you going into debt and I imagine before long he will help you do just that.....cash for clunkers part II.....

Cash for Clunkers 2: The Return of Government Motors - Washington Times

what has the King done??....

http://www.americansolutions.com/dhdn/2011/01/top-five-things-obama-has-done-to-raise-gasoline-prices.phph

what lies was he telling in 08?....

Barack Obama: I think that… we have been slow to move in a better direction when it comes to energy usage. And the president, frankly, hasn’t had an energy policy.* And as a consequence we’ve been consuming energy as if it’s infinite. We now know that our demand is badly outstripping supply with China and India growing as rapidly as they are.

CNBC’s John Harwood: So could the (high) oil prices help us?

Barack Obama: I think that I would have preferred a gradual adjustment. The fact that this is such a shock to American pocketbooks is not a good thing. But if we take some steps right now to help people make the adjustment, first of all by putting more
in their pockets, but also by encouraging the market to adapt to these new circumstances more rapidly, particularly U.S. automakers…

He's a fool way over his head.

2012 can't get here soon enough.

Well thank you! Maybe you should run for President so you can be the next to tell us what we need and what we should do.

How the hell do you know what I need? Besides, what does need have to do with it? My F350 4x4 is paid for, by me, and nobody but me has ever paid for the gas that goes in it. It's nobody's business what I drive, least of all King Obama's.

ps - moving to a farm is a choice. If you lived in an apartment in the city, you wouldn't need a vehicle at all, least of all a truck. Aren't you being selfish?

Eliminate oil speculation, Mr. Obama. That will solve the problem.

Oh.... that would be too simple and wouldn't conform with your green push... :leaving:

Government spending and regulations would cure most of what ails this economy. Cutting his

nose off(intentionally?) despite his face and killing oil exploration to Americans and encouraging

other countries to expand exploration and production is about as counterproductive to our

economy as you can be. He has said he wants energy prices to rise to help his utopian dream

of wind and solar power to become reasonable, plus those dumb Volts.

He really shouldn't have answered that whiner at all. His 1,2,3 was all wrong. His policies are

causing the problem and he knows it. Take that however you wish.

The truth speaks volumes!

Did anyone hear the man say that he was only getting 8 MPG?

I could have missed it but I did watch the thing twice and did not hear him say a word about that. Am I confused or is the Ole King of Gas just full of gas?:screwy:

He did not have an answer to the man's question so he just answered a couple questions that were not even asked. He is the only one who mentioned 8MPG and I like crimson do not think that is anywhere near the norm for anyone these days in their personal vehicles.:screwy:

The best way to lower our gas prices is by drilling for our OWN oil and putting more research into the alternatives that we have while looking for more alternatives. And of course doing what we can to conserve, the same answers that it has always been and always will be.

And it would be really nice to quit hearing all the gas being passed to us from DC.:D
