If you are shooting surplus ammo you will need to some a little something extra BEFORE the Hoppe's. The primers in surplus ammo are corrosive and if not cleaned correctly the salts will remain in the bore and attract moisture resulting in corrosion.

It not hard to clean at all. Some run a few patches of Windex with ammonia through the bore 1st (it's the water that dissolves the salt). Some pour hot boiling water throught the barrel, others use hot soap and water. I've used all the methods and they all work. Just pick your favorite, make sure the barrel is dry afterward, then proceed with Hoppe's or whatever you like.

They key is to get rid of the salt. Water dissolves salt. Petroleum-based products do not.

Balistol, mix it with water (9 water to 1 Balistol) to spray down the barrel after shooting and wipe off the bolt face. Patch the bore with whatever you have and then patch with Balistol and wipe down the rest of the rilfe with Balistol.

I have not found anything better for mil-surp firearms.
