Got my M44 from AIM in yesterday.

Wiped as much gunk off of it as I could last night, going to tear it down to really clean it up tonight.

Debating on refinishing the stock. I know it kills the value, but it's a $200 Russian surplus rifle, not like I'm going to be reselling it to make money off of it.

Not to everyone... I don't understand the idea of how a greasy, beat up rifle is worth more than one that looks good. Particularly when there's eleventygillion others just like it. A few "character marks" that indicate actual use are nice, but leaving it oozing cosmoline makes no sense to me. It's only like that because it's been in storage, it wasn't like that when the soldier had it.

It's a shooter, not a collector's piece. As was said, there are millions of them. Refinish if you want. I will warn you from experience though, the wood on the Mosin is nearly as hard as steel. I refinished one once and had a horrible time getting the stain to soak into the wood. It was that hard.

The mosin is worth picking up if one can be found for a good deal. I guess to each his own. I bought a bunch of them when they had pallets full of them at Rose's for $39.95. Personally I can't stand the things. I haven't shot mine in years and essentially have no use for them at all. To each his own.

I don't get messing with them when you can do both... pull the orig, matching stock and replace with a nice one from a parts gun (lot of shot out or corroded barrel mosins out there), refinish the mismatched one, and in 50 years if the thing is worth 2k or whatever original, you can put it back... just a thought, though I do not know how easy it would be to grab a stock from a parts gun these days. We said the same thing about other guns and they went from millions in original condition to a fraction of that in a few decades. Or don't worry about it, you can always say you are doing your part to make everyone else's guns worth more: the only way *any* of them will ever be worth much is if some of the supply is decreased by sporterizing, shooting to death, etc a few of them, and if you enjoy it better with a nice finish, go for it.
